About The Position

Clean & Prosperous is seeking an Executive Director to lead its next chapter. The organization is a nonpartisan, data-driven entity that has earned the trust of businesses, agencies, legislators, Tribal leaders, and environmental groups. The new Executive Director will join a skilled team, a diversified revenue base, and will be responsible for growing the organization. The ideal candidate will have a track record of building revenue, relationships, and high-performing teams, with an entrepreneurial instinct and the confidence to take on ambitious goals. Clean & Prosperous advances clean energy solutions that grow Washington's economy, improve public health, and reduce carbon emissions. Founded by an entrepreneur, the organization convenes leaders, educates through research and analysis, advocates for climate policy, and electrifies through program delivery. Key achievements include helping to pass and defend the Climate Commitment Act, raising significant funds for community and Tribal projects, supporting EV charging infrastructure deployment, securing funding for zero-emission incentives, and launching initiatives focused on infrastructure permitting and interconnection. The organization is at a growth inflection point, with a strategic plan targeting meaningful growth over the next three years, requiring system and structure development. The current team consists of twelve remote employees, with approximately six direct reports to the Executive Director. The organization is governed by a seven-member Board of Directors. The current Executive Director, Michael Mann, will step down at the end of 2026.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated success in policy advocacy, government affairs, or a closely adjacent arena, and the ability to establish credibility quickly on complex climate and energy issues.
  • Significant climate, energy, or environmental policy experience and familiarity with the Washington political landscape are highly desirable.
  • A track record of bringing money in the door — through contracts and funded work, corporate sponsorship and membership, earned revenue, government grants, or philanthropy.
  • Comfort and credibility with corporations and senior business leaders, and an understanding of the commercial, political, and reputational considerations they navigate.
  • Experience leading a small, nimble, high-performing team and turning opportunity into results.
  • A background that includes founding, launching, or substantially growing an organization or program is a strong fit, as is the ability to add structure without losing momentum.
  • A relevant network of policy, business, philanthropic, or civic relationships, or the demonstrated ability to build one quickly.
  • Diplomatic, collaborative, and credible leadership style.
  • Ability to trust experts and delegate genuinely.
  • Willingness to have hard conversations with grace.
  • Ability to work from data by instinct.
  • Focus on outcome over credit.
  • Online applications only, no email or paper submissions.
  • Upload a cover letter and resume.
  • In cover letter, describe how experience, interests, and values fit with the mission and opportunity.

Nice To Haves

  • Existing Washington relationships are an advantage rather than a requirement.
  • Prior Executive Director experience is not required.
  • Strong candidates from business, government, consulting, philanthropy, advocacy, and other senior leadership roles are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Own the funding model, evaluating it, sustaining and growing contract and funded work, building corporate membership and sponsorship, deepening philanthropic relationships, and managing the organization’s finances with discipline.
  • Serve as the organization's primary external voice with legislators, agencies, corporate leaders, funders, Tribal partners, labor, environmental organizations, and media, building and holding trust.
  • Set priorities with the Board on strategic direction and growth, including focus areas, potential pivots, new earned-revenue opportunities, scaling pace, policy export, and discontinuing activities.
  • Ensure advocacy is rigorous and effective, working alongside an experienced government relations team, and define the Executive Director's role in Washington's legislative work.
  • Lead and develop a talented, independent staff; build the structure, systems, and hiring plan for a growing organization; and sustain an entrepreneurial culture while adding necessary discipline.
  • Work with the Board on governance, board development, strategy, and fundraising engagement.
