About The Position

The Roger Bacon Academy is an education management organization that manages multiple award-winning public charter schools in southeastern North Carolina. Classical Charter Schools of Whiteville serves students in grades K - 8. We are accepting applications for Exceptional Children Teachers. This position is potentially eligible for an additional Teacher Supplement in addition to the base pay. Our Teachers are paid based on the North Carolina State Salary Scale for Bachelor's Degrees. Our researched-based Direct Instruction curriculum begins with reading by phonics and writing with attention to penmanship, spelling, grammar, and style. Mathematics, science, music, and art also receive emphasis in the basics with examples and techniques from time-honored classical sources. The children gain a solid base of knowledge well-grounded in the intellectual, aesthetic, and moral traditions of western civilization. Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in education is required.
  • Valid teaching certificate from North Carolina in the area for which candidate is applying.
  • Must be able to operate a variety of equipment and classroom tools including computers, copiers, etc.
  • Must be able to exert up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally, and /or negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Light work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree.
  • Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
  • Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments or directions from superiors.
  • Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, lists, etc.
  • Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, simple reports, forms, instructional materials, etc., using prescribed format.
  • Must be adaptable to performing under stress and confronted with emergency situations.
  • Ability to constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students, particularly when a student is participating in an inclusive activity.
  • Ability to motivate students.
  • Ability to maintain a clean and orderly environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provides special education services to students identified as having a disability in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Develops and implements the Individual Education Plan (IEP) in classroom settings that are compatible with the student’s age and developmental level.
  • Develops lesson plans, adapts materials, and designs activities to assist EC students to develop appropriate academic, behavioral, and social skills, as well as meeting their IEP goals.
  • Monitors student’s progress and maintains EC records in compliance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Develops and implements instructional plans that are compatible with the school-wide curricular goals and the students’ Individual Education Plan.
  • Uses diagnostic information obtained from tests and other assessment procedures to update IEPs as needed.
  • Provides direct special education instruction to identified students.
  • Employs a variety of teaching methods to meet student needs, which may require the adaptation or development of materials.
  • Monitors student behavior; maintains discipline in the classroom; deescalates inappropriate behaviors; teaches students appropriate behavioral strategies; if certified, restrains students when necessary; records and reports restraints.
  • Assists disabled students with their personal and self-help needs, such as eating, toileting, and other essential tasks that the students are not able to perform by themselves.
  • Communicates with parents regarding their children’s educational progress via periodic written progress reports.
  • Acts as a case manager for assigned students; consults with community care-givers, school support professionals, and parents to better understand and meet student needs.
  • Maintains student records in accordance with North Carolina’s Procedures Governing Programs and services for Children with Disabilities; and complies with state and federal education statutes.
  • Treats all students in a fair and equitable manner, interacts effectively with students, co-workers, parents, and community.
  • Follows a plan for professional development and demonstrates evidence of growth.
