About The Position

The Roger Bacon Academy is an education management organization that manages multiple award-winning public charter schools in southeastern North Carolina. Classical Charter Schools of Whiteville serves students in grades K - 8. This position is potentially eligible for an additional Teacher Supplement in addition to the base pay. Teachers are paid based on the North Carolina State Salary Scale for Bachelor's Degrees. The school utilizes a researched-based Direct Instruction curriculum that emphasizes phonics, writing, mathematics, science, music, and art, drawing from classical sources to provide a strong foundation in western civilization. The academy's mission is to provide the finest educational foundation for the children in the community, expecting employees to be prepared, continuously improve, committed to making a difference, understanding of students, and compassionate in helping children reach their potential. The Direct Instruction teaching method aims for high behavioral and academic standards, with specific methods and support staff for managing behavior and ensuring academic success, offering the opportunity to witness and create amazing student transformations. Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in education is required.
  • Must possess a valid teaching certificate from North Carolina in the area for which the candidate is applying.
  • Must be able to operate a variety of equipment and classroom tools including computers, copiers, etc.
  • Must be able to exert up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally, and /or negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Light work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree.
  • Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
  • Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information.
  • Includes receiving instructions, assignments or directions from superiors.
  • Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, lists, etc.
  • Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, simple reports, forms, instructional materials, etc., using a prescribed format.
  • Must be adaptable to performing under stress and confronted with emergency situations.
  • Ability to constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students, particularly when a student is participating in an inclusive activity.

Responsibilities

  • Provides special education services to students identified as having a disability in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Develops and implements the Individual Education Plan (IEP) in classroom settings compatible with the student’s age and developmental level.
  • Develops lesson plans, adapts materials, and designs activities to assist EC students in developing appropriate academic, behavioral, and social skills, and meeting their IEP goals.
  • Monitors student progress and maintains EC records in compliance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Develops and implements instructional plans compatible with school-wide curricular goals and students’ Individual Education Plans.
  • Develops IEPs for students with disabilities, implements them, and uses diagnostic information to update IEPs as needed.
  • Provides direct special education instruction to identified students using a variety of teaching methods and adapting or developing materials as needed.
  • Monitors student behavior, maintains discipline, deescalates inappropriate behaviors, teaches appropriate behavioral strategies, and restrains students when necessary (if certified), recording and reporting restraints.
  • Assists disabled students with personal and self-help needs such as eating and toileting.
  • Communicates with parents regarding their children’s educational progress via periodic written progress reports.
  • Acts as a case manager for assigned students, consulting with community caregivers, school support professionals, and parents.
  • Maintains student records in accordance with North Carolina’s Procedures Governing Programs and services for Children with Disabilities and complies with state and federal education statutes.
  • Treats all students fairly and equitably, interacting effectively with students, co-workers, parents, and the community.
  • Follows a plan for professional development and demonstrates evidence of growth.
