About The Position

The Roger Bacon Academy is seeking Exceptional Children Teachers for its award-winning public charter schools in southeastern North Carolina, specifically Classical Charter Schools of Southport. This role is responsible for providing special education services to students with disabilities, developing and implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs), and adapting curriculum to meet the unique academic, behavioral, and social needs of EC students. Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in education.
  • Valid teaching certificate from North Carolina in the area for which the candidate is applying.
  • Must be able to operate a variety of equipment and classroom tools including computers, copiers, etc.
  • Must be able to exert up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Light work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree.
  • Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
  • Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments or directions from superiors.
  • Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, lists, etc.
  • Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, simple reports, forms, instructional materials, etc., using a prescribed format.
  • Must be adaptable to performing under stress and confronted with emergency situations.
  • Ability to constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students, particularly when a student is participating in an inclusive activity.
  • Ability to motivate students.
  • Ability to maintain a clean and orderly environment.
  • Ability to perform clerical duties.
  • Ability to maintain basic files and records.
  • Ability to operate common office machines.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
  • Physical ability to lift/carry 20 lbs. and dexterity to perform the duties & responsibilities of the job.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement instructional plans compatible with school-wide curricular goals and students' Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Develop, implement, and update IEPs for students with disabilities using diagnostic and assessment information.
  • Provide direct special education instruction to identified students.
  • Employ a variety of teaching methods, adapting or developing materials as needed to meet student needs.
  • Monitor student behavior, maintain discipline, deescalate inappropriate behaviors, teach appropriate behavioral strategies, and restrain students when necessary (if certified), recording and reporting all restraints.
  • Assist disabled students with personal and self-help needs (e.g., eating, toileting).
  • Communicate with parents regarding their children's educational progress through periodic written progress reports.
  • Act as a case manager for assigned students, consulting with community caregivers, school support professionals, and parents.
  • Maintain student records in accordance with North Carolina's Procedures Governing Programs and services for Children with Disabilities and comply with state and federal education statutes.
  • Treat all students fairly and equitably, interacting effectively with students, co-workers, parents, and the community.
  • Follow a plan for professional development and demonstrate evidence of growth.
