About The Position

The Excavation Manager will be responsible for generating, managing, coordinating, and executing overall project schedules, including weekly and monthly updates for senior leadership review. This role also involves creating and maintaining a 2-week look-ahead schedule, conducting daily work huddles, performing quality control, and managing the daily work assignments of all excavation crews, including subcontractors. The manager will supervise crew conduct and work performance to ensure compliance with project specifications, company standards, and safety policies. Key responsibilities include liaising with Project Managers daily, conducting training on SOPs and Safety Procedures, understanding subcontracted scopes of work, and coordinating with local jurisdictions for required inspections. The role also entails identifying subcontractor non-compliance, resolving construction progress conflicts, maintaining daily logs, issuing notices of non-compliance, ensuring job site cleanliness, managing erosion and sediment control, performing punch list identification, liaising with homeowners/clients, attending management meetings, and conducting daily audits of excavation work. Additionally, the Excavation Manager will handle field administrative duties, report on production performance, assist in developing SOPs and Safety Procedures, enforce safety protocols, ensure necessary notifications are in place before excavation, conduct equipment inspections, oversee civil excavation work performed by subcontractors, assist Superintendents with scope definition and pricing, aid in subcontractor sourcing for seasonal workloads, interview potential hires, coordinate with utility crews, advise on construction sequencing, oversee utility coordination, manage community closeout for NOT release, and oversee pond conversions and PCSM. During inclement weather, the manager will also oversee company snow removal crews.

Requirements

  • Ability to identify deficient work and provide resolution.
  • Communicate using the following tools: telephone, fax machine, written logs, email, and computer.
  • Having a working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite of Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Smartsheets.
  • Strong working ability to read and interpret Blueprints.

Responsibilities

  • Generate, manage, coordinate, and execute an overall project schedule, updating it weekly and monthly for senior leadership review.
  • Generate, manage, coordinate, and execute a 2-week look-ahead schedule that nests and relates to the overall projects’ schedules, maintaining it weekly and publishing it to key leaders.
  • Conduct Daily “Work Huddles” each morning with key Burkentine and subcontractor personnel to coordinate and communicate work expectations for the day.
  • Perform quality control duties and responsibilities regarding the work being performed.
  • Manage, coordinate, schedule, and direct the daily work assignments (project location and scope of work) of all excavation crews including but not limited to all Burkentine employee crews & subcontractor crews.
  • Manage crew schedules through digital scheduling procedures and publish timely reports as required by the Director of Construction Operations.
  • Supervise the conduct of the crews and the performance of their work to ensure and enforce compliance with project specifications, company standards, and company safety policies and practices.
  • Liaise with Project managers daily to coordinate requirements, communicate constraints, resolve issues, and foster a relationship of trust, cooperation, and collaboration.
  • Conduct training on SOPs and Safety Procedures.
  • Have a working knowledge and understanding of the subcontracted scope of work and ensure the subcontractors are fully executing and complying with his contracted scope of work.
  • Coordinate and participate in required inspections with local jurisdictions.
  • Identify subcontractor non-compliance with safety, health, and environmental quality standards.
  • Identify conflicts in construction progress and communicate them to project team for resolution.
  • Maintain daily log (written) of activities on the jobsite.
  • Issue notices of non-compliance to subcontractors regarding quality of work or scheduling.
  • Ensure that the job site is always kept in a clean and organized manner.
  • Manage erosion & sediment control measures, inspections, and compliance reports.
  • Perform job progress and completion punch list identification and completion.
  • Liaise with homeowners/clients as necessary to ensure exceptional customer service.
  • Attend weekly meetings with construction, sales, and leasing management as scheduled.
  • Conduct daily audit checks of excavation teams work and the subcontractor’s work to ensure completeness, accuracy of work, and adherence to plans, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Perform field related administrative duties involving the completing, submissions, and filing of required forms, invoices, tickets, etc. as directed by the Director of Construction.
  • Report on the production performance, capabilities, and capacities of the crews and recommend means and methods for improving excavation production performance, improve efficiencies, control and reduce costs, and maximize crew and equipment utilization.
  • Assist in the development of the Excavation Standard Operating Procedures and Safety Procedures.
  • Enforce Safety Procedures and conduct weekly toolbox talks with each crew.
  • Ensure PA One Calls and other necessary notifications are in place prior to any excavation work.
  • Conduct equipment inspections to ensure the equipment is properly cared for, maintained, and operated. Ensure corrective action is conducted on all deficiencies. Report chronic deficiencies to the Director of Construction. Take appropriate action to train and retrain personnel in proper equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Conduct jobsite visits daily to oversee the performance of excavation work.
  • Oversee the conduct of Civil Excavation work performed by subcontractors. Liaise with the Superintendent to ensure accuracy of work, compliance to plans and specifications, and coordinate the subcontractor efforts with other trades on the project.
  • Assist Superintendents with defining and pricing excavation work outside of standard or contracted scope of work.
  • Assist with the pricing and finding of new subcontractors to keep up with seasonal workloads.
  • Consistently interviewing for lead excavators and excavation laborers.
  • Liaise with Utility Crews, Contractors, and personnel to assist in the coordination of work.
  • Advise, whenever necessary on the Sequence of Construction of Civil and Excavation work.
  • Utility coordination and oversight.
  • Community Closeout to release NOT.
  • Pond Conversions and PCSM oversight and management.
  • Oversee, manage, and direct the work activities of company snow removal crews during inclement weather days.
