About The Position

Hatch is seeking a Civil Estimator to join its estimating team. In this role, you will participate in the development of cost estimates for various infrastructure projects, particularly in the areas of rail transport, civil engineering structures, tunnels, industrial facilities, and other complex civil engineering projects. You will work closely with engineering, project management, and construction teams to develop reliable estimates that will guide the strategic decisions of our clients and project teams. Estimates are one of the pillars of project success. As a Civil Estimator at Hatch, you will play a key role in evaluating complex projects and developing feasible, sustainable, and competitive solutions that will enable our clients to make informed decisions.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in estimating complex infrastructure or civil engineering projects.
  • Experience gained within an engineering consulting firm, a general contractor, or a specialized contractor.
  • DEC in civil engineering, bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a related discipline.
  • Excellent knowledge of construction methods, quantities, and costs associated with civil works.
  • Good command of Microsoft Excel and proficiency with estimation and cost analysis software.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment and manage multiple mandates simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in French and English, both spoken and written.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with a specialized civil engineering or infrastructure contractor.
  • Experience in estimating rail, civil engineering structures, tunnels, or public transit projects.
  • Additional experience in building, mechanical, or electrical fields.
  • Professional certification in estimation or construction economics (AEÉCQ, AACE, ICEC, or equivalent).
  • In-depth knowledge of industry-recognized estimation practices, including AACE estimation classes, risk analysis, and contingencies.
  • Experience with specialized software such as Cleopatra, InEight, CostX, HeavyBid, or other similar tools.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and plan estimates: Understand client needs and project objectives, opportunities, and constraints. Analyze available data to determine the most appropriate estimation approach. Define the estimation class, assumptions, exclusions, and estimation bases applicable to the project. Participate in identifying risks, opportunities, and uncertainty factors that may influence costs.
  • Develop estimates: Perform quantity take-offs from plans, specifications, and technical documents. Prepare estimate sheets and develop unit prices. Establish direct and indirect costs associated with the work. Develop construction methods and execution strategies necessary for estimate development. Evaluate contingencies and other allocations based on the level of definition and project risks.
  • Collaborate and support projects: Collaborate with civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, rail, and construction engineering specialists. Participate in multidisciplinary reviews and project optimization workshops. Provide cost analyses to guide execution strategies and investment decisions. Contribute to the continuous improvement of estimation methods, databases, and tools.
  • Reports and deliverables: Prepare estimate reports, presentations, and documents for project teams and clients. Present assumptions, methodologies, and results to internal and external stakeholders. Ensure the traceability and quality of data used in estimates.
