About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Southcoast Region Highways and Aviation/M&O is looking for an Equipment Operator, Journey 1/2/ Lead/Journey 3 in Kodiak to help us Keep Alaska Moving! This position performs airport and highway maintenance at a State maintenance station that includes a rural Part 139 certificated airport. Responsible for maintaining State highways, airports, seaplane floats, bridges, and docks in a safe and fully operable condition for use by the traveling public. Complies with all applicable Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and State of Alaska rules and regulations concerning maintenance and operation of highways and airports. The Equipment Operator Journey 1 will utilize various types of light duty equipment to perform maintenance activities in support of State of Alaska mission and maintenance of infrastructure, with heavy equipment use in a training capacity. The position with the Iliamna Maintenance Station crew operates and maintains our airport and highways in all conditions, year around. Whether plowing snow in near “white-out” conditions; repairing asphalt; maintaining airfield lighting and signs; or training for any emergency that may occur. Opportunity exists to travel to other stations, possibly for extended periods, during the summer months to complete projects.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by air, rail, sea, or road including cost and limits.
  • Knowledge of procedures for operating motor vehicles, including cars, trucks, or watercraft.
  • Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.
  • Accurately coordinate one's eyes with one's fingers, wrists, or arms to perform job-related tasks (for example, to move, carry, or manipulate objects).
  • Must submit a current copy of your Commercial Driver's License with endorsements (if applying for Equipment Operator Journey 2 Level or higher) at time of interview.
  • Must submit three (3) professional references, including name, job title, and current phone numbers at time of interview.
  • Must possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383).
  • Must register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety-sensitive duties.
  • Must provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.
  • Equipment Operatory Journey 1 Hire approval is conditional in that the proposed appointee successfully obtains a Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of hire, and signs an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
  • Equipment Operator Journey 2: A Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required at time of hire.
  • Equipment Operator Journey 2: A conditional hire approval can only be given for endorsements. The proposed appointee must successfully obtain an N-Tanker endorsement within 90 days of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
  • Equipment Operator Journey 3: A Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required at time of hire.
  • Equipment Operator Journey 3: A conditional hire approval can only be given for endorsements. The proposed appointee must successfully obtain an N-Tanker endorsement within 90 days of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
  • If convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, you may not hold a position in this job class in accordance with the Federal Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act of 1997 (PL-104-208).
  • Selected candidates must comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and procedures and CANNOT start work in a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) position until Management Services or designee has received confirmation of the proposed appointee passing the required Pre-Employment drug test.
