About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Southcoast Region Highways and Aviation/M&O is looking for an Equipment Operator, Journey 1/2/3 Lead in Cold Bay to help us Keep Alaska Moving! This position performs airport and highway maintenance at a State maintenance station that includes a rural Part 139 certificated airport. The role is responsible for maintaining State highways, airports, seaplane floats, bridges, and docks in a safe and fully operable condition for use by the traveling public. The incumbent must comply with all applicable Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and State of Alaska rules and regulations concerning maintenance and operation of highways and airports. The position will utilize various types of light duty equipment to perform maintenance activities in support of the State of Alaska mission and maintenance of infrastructure. Use of heavy equipment will be in a training capacity for the Journey 1 level. The crew operates and maintains our airport and highways in all conditions, year around. Whether plowing snow in near “white-out” conditions; repairing asphalt; maintaining airfield lighting and signs; or training for any emergency that may occur. Opportunity exists to travel to other stations, possibly for extended periods, during the summer months to complete projects.

Requirements

Knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by air, rail, sea, or road including cost and limits.
Knowledge of procedures for operating motor vehicles, including cars, trucks, or watercraft.
Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.
Accurately coordinate one's eyes with one's fingers, wrists, or arms to perform job-related tasks (for example, to move, carry, or manipulate objects).
As a condition of employment, the incumbent shall obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (in accordance with 49 CFR Part 383.23) within six (6) months of hire and shall comply with all provisions set forth in the most recent Equipment Operator Flex Letter of Agreement (LOA).
Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in accordance with 49 CFR Part 383.23, as well as compliance with the most recent Equipment Operator Flex Letter of Agreement (LOA), is required for Journey 2 and 3.
A valid Tanker (N) endorsement is required at the time of appointment or must be obtained within ninety (90) days of hire under a conditional memorandum for Journey 2 and 3.
Must successfully complete all pre-employment requirements applicable to CDL and safety-sensitive positions, including a background check and pre-employment drug testing.
Must comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and procedures and CANNOT start work in a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) position until Management Services or designee has received confirmation of the proposed appointee passing the required Pre-Employment drug test.
Must provide a current copy of your Commercial Driver's License with endorsements (if applying for Equipment Operator Journey 2 Level or higher).
Must provide three (3) professional references, including name, job title, and current phone numbers.
Must register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety-sensitive duties, and to provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR Part 382.
If filled at Level 1, promotion to the Level 2 will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.

Nice To Haves

Management may also require the incumbent to obtain a Hazardous Materials (HazMat) endorsement; however, this is not required at the time of appointment.
If flexing from Equipment Operator Journey 2 to Equipment Operator Journey 3, the incumbent must meet all requirements outlined in the most recent Equipment Operator Flex LOA, including successful completion of employer-provided Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) training and demonstration of ARFF competencies.
