About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) is responsible for enhancing the quality of life in Denver by delivering effective, high-quality, safe, and equitable public infrastructure and services. The Street Maintenance division within DOTI focuses on keeping Denver’s streets and alleys safe, clean, and reliable year-round through services like pothole repair, milling, paving, patching, alley maintenance, and street sweeping. This division also operates Denver’s asphalt plant and leads the citywide snow response program. The Equipment Operator II (Patch Truck) position plays a crucial role in these operations, contributing directly to the maintenance and improvement of Denver’s streets and transportation network.

Requirements

• Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
• Three (3) years of general labor experience which must include two (2) years of experience operating light to medium sized equipment.
• Additional appropriate experience may be substituted for the minimum education requirements.
• Requires a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL "B") with appropriate endorsements at the time of application.
• Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
• At the time of application, candidates are required to hold a valid CDL clear of any restrictions or under prohibited status in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse.
• Applicants for commercial driving positions must demonstrate proficiency in the English language.
• Commercial drivers must be able to do the following in English: Converse with the general public, Understand highway traffic signs and signals, Respond to official inquiries, Make entries on reports and records.

Nice To Haves

• Previous experience operating a unitized patch truck and walk-behind roller.
• Paving experience, or experience working with asphalt.
• Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize daily work assignments.
• Ability to enter and save data on electronic devices daily.

Responsibilities

• Operate a Patch Truck for pothole patching.
• Operates medium sized, specialized equipment in the performance of a variety of construction, maintenance, and other work including the use of attachments designed to perform specialized tasks in combination with the vehicle’s operation or mode of function and ensures the safe and efficient operation of equipment and a variety of work-related tools.
• Inspects vehicle for loose parts, damaged or worn tires, proper air pressure in tires, and other items affecting its safe operation and completes a pre/post trip inspection as defined by federal guidelines.
• Observes on-board instruments while operating equipment and takes routine corrective action if malfunctions are indicated.
• Performs manual labor in construction, maintenance, or other work-related duties when not driving equipment to or operating it at the work site.
• Assists in preventative maintenance of equipment by washing and servicing vehicles with water, oil, and fuel, performs basic maintenance, and makes minor running repairs.
• Keeps trip records and logs, reports defects in the vehicle’s operations, accidents, traffic violations, or damage to the vehicle.
• Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner and provides information within the area of assignment.
• Participates in snow removal duties.
• Trains and mentors junior team members to build their skills and knowledge.
