About The Position

The W93 Systems Development and Realization group is seeking an experienced mechanical designer to check design definition for the W93/Mk7 Systems Development and Realization program at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The role involves expert-level review of 3D CAD models and drawings, hardware design, fabrication, GD&T, and engineering concepts. The checker works independently on complex, unique technical problems, develops original solutions, and may guide multidisciplinary teams through design iterations to resolve potential engineering defects. The role may also include mentoring junior staff in Model-Based Definition (MBD) and GD&T. The Q-20 W93/Mk7 group defines, develops, and fields the warhead system for a new Navy submarine-launched ballistic missile weapon program. The group works with DoD/Navy SSP and DOE/NNSA customers, collaborates with Sandia National Laboratories and Lockheed Martin Space, and integrates production agency teams into design, qualification, and realization. The program is in an early, fast-moving design stage, and the successful candidate will update product and design definitions while working across multiple tasks and deadlines. This is a two-year assignment with a possible extension; conversion is described as unlikely. The position is 100% onsite at TA-3, Building 1400, in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The stated schedule is 5/8 with flexibility; most of the team works a 9/80 schedule and some work 4/10s. Compensation is $62–$67 per hour. Per diem and relocation are available. U.S. citizenship is required, as is a DOE Q clearance or the ability to obtain one; an active Q clearance is strongly preferred.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Science, Math, or a related field from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
  • Advanced understanding of mechanical CAD and experience with mechanical design, manufacturing, inspection, assembly, and testing.
  • Hands-on experience checking CAD models and drawings for form, fit, and function and MBD.
  • Experience with CAD software; Creo is preferred, currently Creo 12. Candidates using other CAD platforms may be considered if they can demonstrate transition capability to Creo.
  • Experience with PDMLink Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), GD&T, and tolerance stack-up analysis software.
  • Mechanical design experience ensuring product definition meets requirements and is producible while reducing rejected products.
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14 standards, particularly Y14.5 (2009) and Y14.41 MBD.
  • Experience developing and interpreting 3D CAD model standards, practices, and procedures for communicating design intent internally and to other National Security Enterprise organizations.
  • Knowledge of hardware fabrication, inspection, and assembly processes.
  • Experience with weapon system configuration management workflows.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks for various customers while ensuring product definition meets requirements and design intent.
  • Experience leading reviews for design, manufacture, assembly, and testing.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and a record of constructive, cooperative working relationships.
  • Independent time management, attention to detail, prioritization skills, and comfort working in a fast-paced environment.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • DOE Q clearance or ability to obtain one; active Q clearance is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work 100% onsite at TA-3.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in drafting and design work in both weapons and non-weapons arenas.
  • Experience developing and implementing organizational design and drafting standards.
  • Previous model and drawing checking experience in the Nuclear Security Enterprise.
  • DOE or NNSA experience.
  • Active Q clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Check design definition by reviewing models and drawings for form, fit, and function and for compliance with Model-Based Definition (MBD).
  • Conduct tolerance and stack analyses and verify compliance with current design standards.
  • Review product definition for producibility, requirements compliance, and reduction of rejected products.
  • Guide staff from diverse backgrounds through design iterations to address potential engineering defects.
  • Lead reviews for design, manufacture, assembly, and test.
  • Recommend MBD best practices and improvements while maintaining compliance with NNSA, LANL, and industry standards.
  • Support weapon system configuration management workflows for authorization, review, release, and distribution of models, drawings, specifications, and related product definition.
  • Mentor junior staff on MBD and GD&T.
  • Work on multiple tasks for varied customers and support teams of engineers, physicists, scientists, technologists, and technicians.

Benefits

  • Per diem available.
  • Relocation assistance available.
