Engineering Manager, Platform

North•New York, NY
•$202,000 - $270,000

About The Position

Platform Engineering owns the services and libraries shared across North, integrations that bring in customer spend from cloud, AI, and data providers, the data platform behind customer-facing numbers, and the infrastructure and tooling used to build, ship, and run the product. The Engineering Manager will lead this team and help it grow into an organization, working with the VP of Engineering on organizational structure, when areas are ready for their own managers, and hiring and developing those managers. The team is in place and its direction is set. The role combines direct people management and reliable delivery with hands-on technical depth: applying North's engineering philosophy, challenging designs, code, and operations, and pursuing continuous improvement and excellence. The manager will treat the platform as a product for North's engineers, make the right ways of working easy through shared patterns and self-service tooling, and ensure teams can reliably own what they build. They will partner across engineering, product, and customer-facing teams to prioritize platform work according to customer and business needs, while balancing long-term investment against near-term product needs. This is a hybrid role based in New York City, with an office in Dumbo, Brooklyn; team members typically work in the office two to three days per week. The role may also be performed remotely within the US.

Requirements

  • 10+ years in software engineering, including 5+ years managing engineers and leading multiple teams at once.
  • Deep, hands-on experience in backend, infrastructure, or data systems sufficient to challenge designs and raise the technical bar.
  • A clear point of view on platform engineering's purpose: enabling other teams through standardization, self-service, and guardrails, and knowing when a pattern is ready to scale versus when it is too early to build.
  • A track record of building teams that meet commitments without heroics.
  • Experience running on-call and incident response and improving reliability over time.
  • Strong writing and communication skills with people inside and outside engineering.
  • Comfort with ambiguity in a growing company and a bias toward simple, durable solutions.
  • Pragmatic, informed views on how AI coding tools change engineering practice.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience managing managers or growing a team into an organization with its own managers.
  • Experience with AWS and data platforms at scale.
  • Experience building golden paths or an internal platform adopted by many teams.
  • Experience leading integration or data pipeline teams.
  • Familiarity with FinOps or cloud billing data.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow Platform Engineering engineers through regular 1:1s, clear expectations, feedback, and career development.
  • Work with the VP of Engineering to grow Platform Engineering from a team into an organization, determine when teams need their own managers, and hire and develop those managers.
  • Treat the platform as a product for North's engineers by building golden paths, shared patterns, and self-service tooling with guardrails instead of gates.
  • Turn recurring questions, incidents, and drift into platform improvements that reach existing services as well as new ones.
  • Hire for growing platform teams and help new engineers ramp up quickly.
  • Turn team charters into plans and commitments other teams can rely on, and raise risks early.
  • Ensure work starts from clear specifications and technical designs, and that teams operate what they ship.
  • Strengthen reliability practices, including on-call, incident response, and observability.
  • Work with product, Product Engineering teams, and customer-facing teams to align platform work with customer and business needs.
  • Balance long-term platform investment against near-term product needs and explain tradeoffs clearly.
