Engineering Manager, Platform & Infrastructure

Tutor Intelligence•Watertown, MA

About The Position

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the team that builds and supports the infrastructure for AI agents. These agents handle tasks such as writing code, running tests, triaging CI, deploying to robots, and operating company tools. The infrastructure must be robust, observable, and easily callable by these agents. The culture at Tutor emphasizes collaboration and direct impact, where engineers are empowered to fix issues immediately. This role has organization-wide scope, requiring the leader to set the direction for the platform function and make critical decisions about shared infrastructure ownership and development. The position is hands-on, with the balance of building and leading determined by the individual's strengths and the team's growth needs. The manager will be responsible for hiring and growing the team as required.

Requirements

  • 10+ years in infrastructure, platform, or systems engineering.
  • Several years of experience leading a team or a function.
  • Experience owning shared infrastructure that a whole engineering organization depended on.
  • Experience building for AI agents, not only with them: shaped environments, tooling, or workflows so that agents could do real engineering work.
  • Experience being accountable for production: On-call, incident response, and postmortems, where downtime had a cost.
  • Experience leading by making others faster: platform work was adopted because it helped, and users came to you first when it didn't.
  • Comfortable with users who are also operators: prefer engineers fixing their own problems in your systems rather than routing everything through you, and build systems that enable this.
  • Clear in writing: decisions and standards are read and followed.

Nice To Haves

  • Robotics, hardware, or another company where infrastructure includes machines in the field.
  • Experience as a first platform or first security lead at a growing company.
  • Experience building a small, senior team rather than a large one.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the team that builds the infrastructure agents run on: Environments, tooling, observability, and context, designed for agents first and for the humans directing them.
  • Keep the commons serving the whole: Decide what the central team owns and what each team owns, make the call when teams need different things from a shared system, and document these decisions.
  • Be the accountable person when the shared layer fails: Production, CI, security, compliance. Ensure problems reach the right hands within the hour and take ownership of issues that fall under your purview.
  • Work alongside the engineers who use what you build: Be present with them during issues and fix the root cause rather than just the reported problem.
  • Build the team: Hire senior engineers, grow the team only as fast as the work requires, and set the direction for how a small team and a fleet of agents cover a large surface.
