Engineering Manager, Platform & Infrastructure

Tutor Intelligence•Watertown, MA
•$200,000 - $300,000

About The Position

At Tutor, AI agents perform most of the engineering work, including writing code, running tests, triaging CI, deploying to robots, and operating company tools. This is only possible if the underlying infrastructure is robust: environments that agents can establish, systems they can monitor, tooling they can access, and context they can read. This role involves leading the team responsible for building and supporting this critical infrastructure. The users of this infrastructure are the engineers within the company, who are hands-on with the systems they use and expect immediate support when issues arise. The Engineering Manager will be responsible for the shared infrastructure that serves the entire organization, making decisions about ownership between the central team and individual teams, resolving conflicts when teams have differing needs from shared systems, and being accountable for the performance of the shared layer. This is a senior, organization-wide role where the individual will set the direction for the platform and infrastructure function. Hands-on contribution is expected, with the balance of individual building versus leading others determined by the individual's strengths and the team's growth, which the manager will oversee through hiring.

Requirements

  • 10+ years in infrastructure, platform, or systems engineering, including several leading a team or a function
  • Owned shared infrastructure that a whole engineering organization depended on
  • Built for AI agents, not only with them: Shaped environments, tooling, or workflows so that agents could do real engineering work, and have opinions about what that takes
  • Been accountable for production: On-call, incident response, and the postmortems that followed, somewhere downtime cost something
  • Lead by making others faster: Platform work was adopted because it helped, and the people who used it came to you first when it didn't
  • Comfortable with users who are also operators: Prefer engineers fix their own problems in your systems than route everything through you, and build so they can
  • Clear in writing: Decisions and standards written are read and followed

Nice To Haves

  • Robotics, hardware, or another company where infrastructure includes machines in the field
  • Experience as a first platform or first security lead at a growing company
  • Experience building a small, senior team rather than a large one

Responsibilities

  • Lead the team that builds the infrastructure agents run on: Environments, tooling, observability, and context, designed for agents first and for the humans directing them
  • Keep the commons serving the whole: Decide what the central team owns and what each team owns, make the call when teams need different things from a shared system, and write the decisions down so they hold
  • Be the accountable person when the shared layer fails: Production, CI, security, compliance. Make sure a problem reaches the right hands within the hour, and take the ones that are yours
  • Work alongside the engineers who use what you build: They will be on a problem the moment it appears. Be there with them, and fix the cause rather than the report
  • Build the team: Hire senior engineers, grow the team only as fast as the work requires, and set the direction for how a small team and a fleet of agents cover a large surface

Benefits

  • The job posting mentions a salary range of $200,000 - $300,000 a year.
