About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Central Region Design & Engineering Services, is seeking an Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 Flex to assist in the design of airport improvement projects. This role involves performing pre-licensure engineering duties under the supervision of a registered professional engineer, focusing on projects ranging from small rural airports to large international airports. Occasional design of small highway projects may also be required. The position is crucial to the DOT&PF mission of 'Keep Alaska Moving' by contributing to the design of runways, taxiways, aprons, developing plan sets, editing specifications, performing quantity takeoffs, cost estimating, and writing technical reports. Collaboration with the design team to prepare bid-ready documents for contractors is also a key aspect of the role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET (or equivalent for Engineering Assistant 1).
  • An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination (for Engineering Assistant 1).
  • One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere (for Engineering Assistant 2).
  • Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere (for Engineering Assistant 2).
  • Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level (for Engineering Assistant 3).
  • Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of engineering and their practical applications.
  • Ability to identify problems, determine accuracy and relevance of information, and use sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.
  • Effective oral communication skills, including making clear and convincing oral presentations and listening to others.
  • Accountability for measurable high-quality, timely, and cost-effective results, setting priorities, and accepting responsibility for own actions and decisions.
  • Ability to encourage and facilitate cooperation, pride, trust, and group identity, fostering commitment and team spirit, and working with others to achieve goals.
  • Cover Letter detailing how applicant possesses position-specific competencies and how their skills benefit the position.
  • Three (3) professional references, including name, job title, and current phone numbers.
  • Copy of academic transcripts (unofficial are okay, please ensure that the institution name/URL is listed on the transcript) if using education to verify minimum qualifications.

Nice To Haves

  • A valid Driver's License is preferred.
  • Engineer-in-training certification is preferred but not essential.
  • Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for required experience (for Engineering Assistant 2).
  • Four years of any combination of ABET accredited postsecondary education in engineering, architecture, or land surveying and/or engineering, architectural or land surveying experience may substitute for the required degree (for Engineering Assistant 3).
  • Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience (for Engineering Assistant 3).
