About The Position

Anthropic is hiring for a special projects role on its energy team. The role addresses cross-functional energy problems that do not belong to one deal or region, carrying them from an unclear question through a decision, process, or tool and then handing them off. It works with Compute teams responsible for data-center siting, design, construction, financing, and operations; with Anthropic teams including policy, legal, communications, finance, and community relations; and with external organizations such as FERC, state commissions and agencies, RTOs and ISOs, utilities, industry groups, and other large energy customers. The position combines deep energy expertise, project execution, coalition-building, and clear communication. It helps ensure that internal teams plan around consistent assumptions about power availability, timing, reliability, and cost; explains energy decisions to executives and other non-energy audiences; supports the company's energy policy positions; and represents Anthropic in external forums and regulatory processes. The role also manages consultants and other outside support. Anthropic describes itself as a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco and currently expects staff to work from an office at least 25% of the time, with some roles potentially requiring more office time.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of experience in energy policy, energy markets, or energy strategy.
  • Experience building coalitions among complex, multifunctional stakeholder groups inside and outside an organization.
  • Ability to take projects from an unclear question to a completed result across teams that do not report to you.
  • Ability to independently read a tariff, energy services agreement, or FERC order and explain its commercial implications for a large customer.
  • Practical knowledge of state commission processes and RTO or ISO stakeholder processes.
  • Ability to write quickly and plainly for executives outside energy and external audiences.
  • Good judgment about what to say publicly, who should say it, and when to say nothing.
  • Comfort with unscoped work and switching between different problems in the same week.
  • Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • A field of study relevant to the role, demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with data centers or other large loads on the customer, developer, or utility side.
  • Commercial experience negotiating utility service agreements, energy services agreements, or power purchase agreements (PPAs), or advising the people who negotiate them.
  • Experience in a chief of staff, strategy, or consulting role.
  • Direct experience in a FERC or state commission proceeding, or in an RTO or ISO working group.
  • Familiarity with gas as well as power.

Responsibilities

  • Take on cross-functional energy problems without a natural owner, work with relevant teams toward a decision, process, or tool, and hand off completed work.
  • Connect energy commercial leads with site selection, data-center design, delivery, operations, and finance teams so they plan using consistent assumptions about power timing, quantity, reliability, and cost.
  • Write strategy documents, decision memos, and leadership updates explaining energy-team decisions to executives outside the energy field.
  • Build processes and tools, using Claude, to keep team commitments, open decisions, and stakeholder records up to date.
  • Run the energy team's planning rhythm, including priorities, headcount planning, consultant roster, and follow-up on open decisions.
  • Serve as the energy team's first point of contact for policy, legal, communications, community relations, finance, and other Anthropic teams, routing questions to the appropriate people and securing accurate answers.
  • Serve as an energy subject matter expert for the policy team and work with it on Anthropic's positions on energy issues.
  • Explain to communications and community relations what site power supply means for local rates, reliability, and emissions.
  • Keep signed commitments and public statements consistent with each other and with Anthropic's ratepayer-protection commitment.
  • Prepare energy-team leaders and executives for external meetings, panels, and testimony, and follow up on resulting actions.
  • Represent the energy team in industry working groups, trade associations, large-customer coalitions, and research collaborations; participate, shape the work, and report back relevant information.
  • Work with policy and legal teams to engage with FERC, state commissions, agencies and legislatures, and RTO and ISO stakeholder processes on issues affecting Anthropic's portfolio.
  • Explain the commercial impact of proposed tariffs or rules to commercial leads early enough to inform negotiations.
  • Build and maintain relationships with utilities, grid operators, regulators' staff, and counterparts at other large-load customers.
  • Manage outside counsel, consultants, and analysts supporting the work, including scope, budget, and quality.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and benefits
  • Optional equity donation matching
  • Generous vacation and parental leave
  • Flexible working hours
  • Office space for collaborating with colleagues
