About The Position

The Emerging Store Manager (ESM) is a developmental leadership assignment intended to prepare associates for potential Store Manager opportunities in Walmart US store operations. The role provides training and development across retail operations, people leadership, merchandising, financial management, customer experience, and community engagement. The assignment is expected to last no longer than 12 to 18 months, but does not guarantee a Store Manager placement or a fixed timeframe. Associates must maintain mobility within their assigned region to apply for and potentially move into Store Manager positions. If a Store Manager role is not secured within 12 to 18 months, next steps will depend on performance and business needs and may involve placement in another role at a different level. The ESM learns to manage store financial performance, monitor sales and profit goals, analyze business and community trends, and act on business reports and profit-and-loss statements. The role supports effective merchandising, customer service, staffing and succession planning, community outreach, associate relations, management-team leadership, safety, asset protection, quality assurance, and operational compliance. The ESM also helps execute business plans and organizational objectives, remove barriers to performance, develop associates and managers, and build partnerships with stakeholders across the organization. The position requires successful completion of developmental milestones and competency assessments throughout the assignment. It also involves promoting Walmart policies, values, ethics, and the Open Door Policy; supporting community outreach and sustainability efforts; and demonstrating the company’s stated expectations for respect, integrity, customer service, and continuous improvement.
