About The Position

The Emerging Store Manager (ESM) is a developmental leadership assignment designed to prepare associates for potential Store Manager roles in Walmart US store operations. The assignment includes training and development across retail operations, people leadership, merchandising, financial management, customer experience, and community engagement. It has no guaranteed timeframe, but is expected to last no longer than 12 to 18 months, with the expectation of progressing into a Store Manager position during that period. Associates must maintain mobility within their assigned region for Store Manager applications and potential placement. If a Store Manager role is not secured within the timeframe, next steps will depend on performance and business needs and may include placement in another role at a different level. The ESM learns to manage store financial performance, sales, merchandising, staffing, customer service, community relationships, associate concerns, management-team objectives, compliance, asset protection, safety, and business plans. The role supports organizational objectives and works with stakeholders including Market Managers, Regional leadership, Merchandising, Human Resources, and Asset Protection. Successful completion of developmental milestones and competency assessments is expected. Additional job-related duties throughout the store may be assigned as necessary. The position requires either a qualifying bachelor's degree and two years of relevant management experience, or four years of relevant management experience, along with two years of general management experience that includes financial accountability. Additional facility-specific firearms or ammunition qualifications may apply. Preferred qualifications include further relevant management experience, Walmart leadership experience, experience supervising at least 50 associates, and willingness to relocate within the assigned region. The annual salary range is $85,000 to $120,000, with additional annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Certain positions may also receive regional pay-zone or complex-structure compensation. Walmart lists medical, vision, dental, financial, paid-time-off, leave, disability, discount, education, and other benefits; eligibility may vary by classification and length of employment.
