The Fresno Police Department is seeking energetic, organized, and dependable individuals to answer inbound calls and provide high-quality customer service. New employees receive training to answer and evaluate emergency police, fire, and medical service calls and to operate a multi-channel Computer-Assisted Dispatch (CAD) system console and related equipment to dispatch appropriate public safety units. Duties also include performing record checks for officers in the field, maintaining records of available police units, and responding to requests. The position reports to the Emergency Services Communications Supervisor and requires the ability to operate radio communications equipment and type at a speed necessary to complete assigned duties in a timely manner. At management's discretion, an Emergency Services Dispatcher I may be flexed to Emergency Services Dispatcher II within the first 18 months of employment. Flexing depends on successful completion of the Emergency Services Dispatcher Training Program and Police Department certification that the employee can perform Dispatcher II duties. The Dispatcher II monthly salary range is $5,809–$6,974. Immediate and future vacancies may be filled from the eligible list for three months after its creation, with the City retaining the option to extend that period. If the examination process is suspended, the eligible list may be limited to three months. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications by the filing deadline. Candidates considered by the Police Department must successfully complete a computer voice stress analyzer and/or polygraph test, an extensive background investigation, and a department interview before receiving a conditional offer. Candidates receiving a conditional offer must pass a medical examination, including drug and alcohol testing. Falsification of information or failure to meet requirements may result in disqualification. The examination may consist of a job-related online written examination worth 100%, designed to assess aptitude for public safety dispatch work. Candidates must pass to qualify for the eligible list. The examination was tentatively scheduled for the week of November 23, 2026. Qualified veterans who pass the examination may receive five points added to their final score, subject to submission of proof of honorable military service during the filing period. Applications and materials are accepted online only and must be submitted by midnight on the closing deadline. Required licenses, certifications, and education must be supported with documentation. Foreign education must be evaluated by a credential evaluation service recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Applicants should provide detailed job-duty descriptions in the work-experience section; resumes are supplemental and do not replace this section.
