Electromagnetic Design Engineer

Nidec•Atlanta, GA

About The Position

Nidec Motion and Drives is seeking an Electromagnetic Design Engineer to design electric propulsion systems for battery-powered aircraft. The role applies electromagnetic and permanent-magnet motor design expertise to brushless DC motor drive systems, supporting projects from ideation through production in collaboration with design engineers, customers, and cross-functional teams. The position contributes to aerospace electrification and transportation decarbonization. The engineer independently develops and analyzes motor designs, supports integration of power electronics with motors, and develops verification and validation testing for electromechanical products. The role includes interpreting prototype test data, preparing design documentation and reports, supporting regulatory compliance and supplier selection, and transitioning products into production. It may also involve providing technical guidance to contractors, technicians, and co-ops and managing projects or processes within the team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering; the additional role details also state a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5–10 years of experience in electric motors and drives or a similar industry; additional role details state a minimum of 7 years of prior relevant experience.
  • Experience with permanent-magnet motor design.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to prioritize and align tasks.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to translate customer requirements and electromagnetic principles into product designs.
  • Knowledge of power electronics and how they interact with motors.
  • Ability to summarize and analyze data and issue reports on completed design work.
  • Ability to work independently on moderately complex projects under limited supervision.
  • Experience with simulation software such as Mathematica.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with electromagnetic design software such as MotorCAD, Ansys Maxwell, Altair Flux, SPEED, and/or JMAG.
  • Ability to design and specify advanced motor test equipment and procedures.
  • Experience with induction motor design; switched-reluctance design is a plus.
  • Familiarity with New Product Development and Phase-Gate processes.
  • Creative thinking and ability to develop best-cost solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop electromagnetic motors, including precision brushless DC motor drive systems, using theoretical and practical motor-design skills.
  • Generate motor designs to design and customer specifications using electromagnetic design software such as MotorCAD, Ansys Maxwell, Altair Flux, SPEED, or JMAG.
  • Perform independent motor design analyses and prepare reports on the results.
  • Apply knowledge of power electronics and motor interactions to integrate power electronics with electric motor designs.
  • Develop, maintain, and upgrade tests for design verification and validation of electromechanical products.
  • Design and specify advanced motor test equipment and perform design verification activities.
  • Work with external customers on projects and translate customer requirements and electromagnetic principles into product designs.
  • Prepare design specifications, verification test plans, change orders, and other design documentation.
  • Use MS Excel and MS Word to summarize data and report on design work.
  • Communicate work, meetings, and decisions to peers and supervisors.
  • Work with new product development teams to transition products into production.
  • Provide guidance to outside contract personnel supporting projects.
  • Provide work direction, coaching, and guidance to technicians and/or co-ops.
  • Support compliance with regulatory requirements, including EMI/EMC, UL, and RoHS standards.
  • Participate in selecting vendors and fabrication sources in accordance with quality requirements and released specifications.
  • Use knowledge of steady-state and dynamic performance of electric machines and power electronic converters to optimize drive-system performance and cost.
  • Analyze working-prototype data from digital data acquisition and signal-processing equipment and make design adjustments to improve performance or other attributes.
  • Select motor pole counts and specify commutation requirements to ensure compatibility with customer electronics and motor pole/slot combinations.
  • Coach, review, and delegate work to other professionals and manage end-to-end projects or processes.
