About The Position

Rivian is seeking an electromagnetic engineer to design, model, and analyze high-performance electric motors and actuators. The role also develops computational methods, analytical modeling algorithms, and multi-objective optimization tools to improve simulation fidelity and accelerate design iterations. The engineer works with Thermal, Mechanical, NVH, Vehicle Integration, and Physical Validation Labs teams to meet automotive-grade reliability, efficiency, and cost targets. The role provides technical support for component-level testing and establishes simulation-to-test alignment pipelines to improve finite-element accuracy and reduce physical prototyping. It also collaborates across functions to address manufacturing and production issues, perform technical root-cause analysis, and troubleshoot prototype builds and high-volume production-line issues.

Requirements

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis on electromagnetic design of e-machines and at least 5 years of experience.
  • Experience designing and analyzing high-torque- and power-density IPM/PM and induction electric machines.
  • Expert-level skills with electromagnetic analysis tools such as JMAG, COMSOL, and ANSYS/Maxwell.
  • Experience using MATLAB/Simulink for data analysis.
  • Strong understanding of validating motor electromagnetic and thermal designs, including performance and durability.
  • Good understanding of e-machine build processes in both prototype and high-volume manufacturing stages.
  • Self-motivated, with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and accurately.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead in-house electromagnetic design of e-machines to support Rivian’s product development plan.
  • Determine e-machine electrical and mechanical specifications in support of Rivian’s product roadmap.
  • Perform electromagnetic analysis, modeling, and design of electric machines for Rivian products.
  • Carry out R&D activities to develop high-quality motors for production programs.
  • Develop, verify, and optimize modeling tools and design processes to predict and optimize electric-machine performance.
  • Develop test plans and work with motor-control and/or testing teams to validate electromagnetic and thermal performance.
  • Develop material databases through in-house testing of electric-motor active components, including electrical steel, magnet-wire insulation, and permanent magnets.
  • Support structural and mechanical analysis of motor systems, including NVH and durability.
  • Support and/or perform thermal analysis to predict electric-machine thermal characteristics.
  • Work with mechanical engineers and/or designers to create motor 3D models and 2D drawings and release them to manufacturing.
  • Support powertrain system integration and vehicle-control integration.
  • Support motor-manufacturing development, including material selection and process evaluation.
  • Study, invent, and implement new electric-machine technology.
  • Provide technical support for component-level testing and establish simulation-to-test alignment pipelines.
  • Collaborate across functions to resolve manufacturing and production issues, perform root-cause analysis, and troubleshoot prototype builds and high-volume production-line issues.
