About The Position

Northrop Grumman’s Space Systems Sector is seeking an EMI/EMC Engineer – Level 5 to join its Specialty Engineering team in Dulles, Virginia. The engineer performs electromagnetic interference and electromagnetic compatibility design, analysis, testing, and compliance verification from component through system level throughout the product lifecycle. The role provides technical authority for Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) controls across the Space Systems Sector, leads E3 work from concept through delivery, and defines compliance architecture for space vehicles, subsystems, and components. The position involves setting and flowing down E3 requirements; conducting and reviewing design, analysis, and testing across programs; preparing compliance plans and reports; developing analytical and numerical models; troubleshooting non-compliance; and supporting proposals and customer and program reviews. The engineer also reviews subcontractor deliverables, establishes organizational standards and best practices, and mentors less-experienced engineers. Occasional travel and off-shift work may be required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a STEM discipline and 12 or more years of related experience; or a master’s degree in one of those fields and 10 or more years of related experience; or a Ph.D. in one of those fields and 8 or more years of related experience.
  • Active U.S. Government Top Secret clearance at the time of application.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) and Special Access Program (SAP) access, as determined by business needs.
  • Experience defining E3 requirements, decomposition, and flow-down for space systems.
  • Extensive technical knowledge and experience complying with relevant E3 and EMI/EMC standards, such as MIL-STD-461, SMC-S-008, and MIL-STD-464, and familiarity with related aerospace and commercial EMC standards.
  • Experience working with cross-functional electrical, mechanical, thermal, and systems teams to develop integrated EMI/EMC compliance solutions.
  • Experience in electromagnetics and/or RF design, such as circuit design, cable shielding, interference coupling, antennas, or filters.
  • Analytical skills, including reliability and risk mitigation.
  • U.S. citizenship is required for positions requiring a government clearance and certain other restricted positions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with EMI/EMC design, analysis, and testing for space systems programs.
  • Experience with EMI/EMC test equipment, including EMI receivers, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, signal and pulse generators, network analyzers, RF generators, amplifiers, monitors and antennas, current probes, LISNs, and automated test software such as TILE or Nexio.
  • Experience building and running numerical models for EM, ESD, and/or RF characterization using tools such as HFSS, CST, and/or EMA.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a subject matter expert and technical authority, providing design guidance and strategic direction for E3 controls across the Northrop Grumman Space Systems Sector.
  • Lead E3 activities through all phases of program lifecycles, from concept to delivery.
  • Understand, decompose, tailor, and allocate system- and component-level EMI/EMC requirements, including radiated and conducted emissions and susceptibility, grounding, DC bonding, and electrostatic discharge.
  • Lead EMI/EMC design, analysis, and testing across multiple programs, including independent review and approval of critical technical artifacts.
  • Define E3 compliance architecture for space vehicles, subsystems, and components.
  • Prepare and review EMI/EMC documents, including control plans, test plans and procedures, and qualification test reports.
  • Develop analytical and numerical models to quantify E3 environments and support design and verification, including models for shielding, circuit and cable isolation, interference coupling, charging, and ESD.
  • Support EMI/EMC test planning and execution in laboratory settings using EMI, RF, and electronics test equipment.
  • Lead non-compliance root-cause investigations and troubleshoot EMI issues from board to system level, providing practical solutions.
  • Contribute E3 technical strategy and basis-of-estimate inputs to proposal efforts.
  • Represent E3 Specialty Engineering at technical meetings, design reviews, customer acceptance reviews, test readiness reviews, and other program reviews.
  • Review and approve EMI/EMC subcontractor deliverables.
  • Establish and enforce E3 design standards, best practices, and lessons learned across the organization.
  • Guide, mentor, and assist in the technical development of junior and mid-level EMI/EMC engineers.
  • Travel occasionally to support testing and reviews and work occasional off-shifts as required.
