Electromagnetic Design Engineer

Nidec Motor Corporation•Atlanta, GA

About The Position

Nidec Motion and Drives is seeking an Electromagnetic Design Engineer to design and develop electric propulsion systems for battery-powered aircraft. The role applies electromagnetic design expertise to precision brushless DC motor drive systems and supports aerospace customers working toward lower-carbon transportation. The engineer works with a diverse team from ideation through production, contributing to motor and drive designs that meet customer requirements and balance performance and cost. The position involves creating and analyzing motor designs with electromagnetic simulation software; integrating power electronics with motor designs; developing and maintaining verification and validation tests; and analyzing prototype performance data. The engineer also prepares design documentation and reports, works with customers and cross-functional project teams, supports the transition of products into production, and provides guidance to contract personnel, technicians, and co-ops. Additional work includes supporting regulatory compliance and selecting vendors and fabrication sources in line with quality and released specifications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum 5–10 years of experience in electric motors and drives or a similar industry.
  • Experience with permanent-magnet motor design.
  • Knowledge of power electronics and how they interact with motors.
  • Ability to translate customer requirements and electromagnetic principles into product designs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, solve problems, and pay close attention to detail.
  • Ability to summarize and analyze data and issue reports on design work.
  • Experience with simulation software such as Mathematica.
  • The role’s additional job details state that it requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and a minimum of 7 years of prior relevant experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with electromagnetic design software such as MotorCAD, Ansys Maxwell, Altair Flux, SPEED, and/or JMAG.
  • Experience with induction motor design or switched-reluctance design.
  • Ability to design and specify advanced motor test equipment and procedures.
  • Familiarity with new product development and Phase-Gate processes.
  • Creative thinking and experience developing best-cost solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop electromagnetic motor systems, including permanent-magnet brushless DC motor drive systems, to design and customer specifications.
  • Generate motor designs using software such as MotorCAD, Ansys Maxwell, Altair Flux, SPEED, and/or JMAG, independently analyze designs, and report results.
  • Apply knowledge of power electronics and motor interactions to integrate power electronics with electric motor designs.
  • Develop, maintain, and upgrade tests for design verification and validation of electromechanical products.
  • Design and specify advanced motor test equipment and perform design verification activities.
  • Work with external customers on projects and translate their requirements and electromagnetic principles into product designs.
  • Prepare design specifications, verification test plans, change orders, and other design documentation; use Excel and Word to summarize data and issue reports.
  • Communicate work, meetings, and decisions to peers and supervisors.
  • Interface with new product development teams to transition products into production.
  • Guide outside contract personnel and provide work direction, coaching, and guidance to technicians and co-ops.
  • Support compliance with regulatory requirements, including EMI/EMC, UL, and RoHS standards; participate in vendor and fabrication-source selection to meet quality and released specifications.
  • Use knowledge of steady-state and dynamic electric-machine performance and power-electronic converters to balance drive-system performance and cost.
  • Analyze working-prototype data from digital data-acquisition and signal-processing equipment and make design adjustments to improve performance or other attributes.
  • Select motor pole counts and specify commutation requirements for customers using their own electronics, ensuring compatible motor pole/slot combinations and drive commutation techniques.
  • Contribute innovative designs and high-performance functionality, prioritize tasks, solve technical problems, and work effectively across functions.
  • Coach, review, and delegate work to other professionals and manage end-to-end projects or processes.
