Electrical and Mechanical Designer/Drafter

Matrix Design Group•Fort Myers, FL
•Onsite

About The Position

Saminco Solutions LLC and American Traction Solutions Inc. are sister companies that design, manufacture, and support electric propulsion, power electronics, motor control, and industrial power technologies for mining, rail, transportation, electric vehicles, marine, and industrial equipment. The Designer/Drafter supports the design and development of electrical systems and power-conversion products by turning engineering concepts, legacy drawings, field information, and customer requirements into accurate, production-ready documentation. The position works collaboratively with electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, and service teams at the companies’ Fort Myers, Florida headquarters. It is on-site and reports to the VP of Engineering. The role creates and maintains electrical and mechanical drawings, models, bills of materials, and controlled documentation; supports manufacturing, assembly, testing, purchasing, quality, and field service; and assists with prototypes, product improvements, reverse engineering, equipment surveys, and engineering changes. The Designer/Drafter also uses AI tools judiciously to accelerate routine drafting tasks and explores ways to automate repetitive work. Work is primarily performed in an office and manufacturing environment, with occasional time on the manufacturing floor and occasional travel. Regular computer, CAD workstation, and standard office equipment use is required. The employee must follow company safety requirements and use required personal protective equipment. Occasional standing, walking, stooping, or crouching may be required, as well as lifting or moving up to 10 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

Requirements

  • Associate degree, technical diploma, or certificate in electrical or mechanical drafting, engineering technology, computer-aided design, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
  • Two or more years of electrical drafting or electrical CAD experience in a manufacturing, industrial, transportation, mining, or power-electronics environment.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor, including part modeling, assemblies, and drawing creation.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical and ability to learn company-specific systems and workflows.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, Bills of Materials, engineering specifications, and technical manuals.
  • Working knowledge of electrical components, wire and cable identification, connectors, terminal blocks, relays, contactors, motors, drives, control panels, and related hardware.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical drafting practices, dimensioning, tolerancing, fits, fasteners, and material callouts.
  • Understanding of common manufacturing methods, including machining, sheet-metal fabrication, welding, and assembly.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, problem-solving, and document-control discipline.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, quality, purchasing, and service personnel.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet established deadlines with limited supervision.
  • Must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States and complete the required I-9 and employment verification process; work authorization sponsorship is not offered.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with high-power electrical equipment, AC or DC traction systems, variable-frequency drives, motor controls, battery chargers, converters, or industrial control panels.
  • Experience creating drawings for electrical enclosures, power-electronics assemblies, vehicle systems, and industrial or mining equipment, including frame design, cable and component routing, and large assemblies in Inventor.
  • Familiarity with UL 508A, NFPA 70, IEC practices, and ISO 9001 quality systems.
  • Experience with product data management, ERP, or engineering document-control systems.
  • Experience in a low-volume, high-mix manufacturing environment, including new-product development, retrofits, machine rebuilds, and configuration-controlled product lines.
  • Experience supporting prototype builds, production, inspection, or field-service teams.

Responsibilities

  • Create, revise, and maintain electrical schematics, wiring and interconnection diagrams, cable and wire schedules, panel layouts, assembly drawings, and Bills of Materials using AutoCAD and AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Create and revise detailed 2D mechanical drawings and 3D solid models using AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor.
  • Prepare part, assembly, fabrication, enclosure, sheet-metal, weldment, and installation drawings; exploded views; layouts; assembly instructions; and production documentation from sketches, markups, specifications, legacy documents, verbal instructions, field measurements, and engineering direction.
  • Ensure drawings include appropriate dimensions, tolerances, notes, materials, and finishes, and reflect design intent, product requirements, customer specifications, and manufacturing methods.
  • Check drawings for completeness, dimensional accuracy, fit, function, electrical consistency, manufacturability, and compliance with company drafting standards.
  • Support manufacturing, assembly, test, purchasing, quality, and field service by answering drawing-related questions and helping resolve documentation, design, fabrication, assembly, and installation issues.
  • Assign and maintain drawing numbers, part numbers, revision levels, component references, wire labels, and related records according to company standards.
  • Process Engineering Change Orders and update affected drawings, Bills of Materials, and supporting documentation.
  • Update existing drawings, incorporate redlines and as-built information into controlled drawing packages, and convert legacy or field-marked documents into controlled digital files and models.
  • Support prototype development, product improvements, reverse engineering, and engineering change requests.
  • Assist with component selection and verify mechanical designs accommodate electrical devices, wiring, cooling, service access, and environmental requirements.
  • Develop and maintain reusable drawing templates, symbols, libraries, title blocks, and drafting standards.
  • Assist with equipment surveys and verification of existing electrical systems when required.
  • Maintain organized electronic drawing files and released documentation according to document-control procedures, ensuring approved current revisions are available to authorized users.
  • Participate in design reviews, contribute practical recommendations to improve product quality, reliability, serviceability, and production efficiency, and incorporate feedback accurately and promptly.
  • Follow applicable safety, quality, and confidentiality requirements.
  • Use AI tools with sound judgment for routine tasks such as drawing checks, BOM creation, note drafting, and legacy-document cleanup; find and test ways to automate repetitive drafting tasks and share them with colleagues.
