The Mechanical Designer/Drafter creates and modifies detailed drawings from engineering sketches, layouts, and notes, and contributes design changes that support manufacturing operations and product quality. The role checks drawing plots for correctness and standards compliance, collaborates with design engineers on model accuracy and drafting standards, and supports engineering change documentation and CAD file management. Assignments may be complex or non-routine and are performed under limited supervision. The successful candidate is motivated, team-oriented, quality-focused, and able to work under schedule pressure. The position designs major segments of complex subsystems, creates 3-D part and assembly models in SolidWorks 2023, and prepares production drawings. It requires applying knowledge of materials, finishes, welding, and manufacturing processes; supporting designs from concept through manufacture; integrating and packaging electromechanical enclosures; and performing Form, Fit, and Function verification. The designer participates in design reviews, coordinates closely with engineers and manufacturing personnel, resolves design issues during fabrication, and updates drawings. The role also performs tolerance analysis and applies GD&T and applicable MIL-STD, ASME, NAS, and DOD standards. The position may technically direct and check the work of lower-level drafters and provide CAD expertise for project problem-solving. AutoCAD or similar tools, including SMAP 3D and DraftSight, may be used to prepare 2-D drawings. Evening and weekend availability may be needed to meet goals and deadlines, and overtime may be required. The role has no formal supervisory responsibilities, though it may provide technical leadership and training to lower-level designers.
