About The Position

Creates and modifies detailed drawings using CAD hardware and software based on engineering sketches, layouts, or notes. Contributes design modifications to support manufacturing operations and product quality, checks drawing plots for correctness and compliance with standards, and works with design engineers on model accuracy, design, drafting standards, and ECN/ECR documentation. May support system management through file maintenance, backup, and storage. Assignments may be complex or non-routine and are performed under limited supervision. The role requires a motivated, team-oriented, quality-focused person who can work under schedule pressure. The designer creates 3-D models of parts and assemblies in SolidWorks 2023 to develop subsystem layouts and prepares production drawings from those models. The role applies knowledge of materials, finishes, welding, and other manufacturing processes; supports designs from concept through manufacture; packages electromechanical enclosures; and performs Form, Fit, and Function verification. The designer participates in reviews, works closely with engineering and manufacturing personnel, and supports fabrication by resolving design issues and updating drawings. Additional work includes tolerance analysis, application of GD&T, and compliance with applicable MIL-STD, ASME, NAS, and DOD standards. The role may technically direct and check drawings produced by lower-level drafters, provide CAD expertise for project problem-solving, and use AutoCAD or similar tools such as SMAP 3D and DraftSight for 2D drawings. Evening and weekend availability may be needed to meet goals and deadlines, and overtime may be required. The position has no formal supervisory responsibilities, but may provide technical leadership to lower-level designers, including training, planning and assigning work, directing work, and resolving technical work problems. A bachelor's degree in a related field, an associate degree in a related field plus at least five years of directly related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is specified. Required technical capabilities include advanced 3D solid modeling and drafting in SolidWorks, advanced 2D drafting with AutoCAD, SMAP 3D, or DraftSight, advanced knowledge of engineering drawing practices under ASME Y14 standards, intermediate GD&T knowledge under ASME Y14.5, intermediate knowledge of machining operations and shop practices, and familiarity with PDM file-manager software. SolidWorks 2023 is the current software of choice. A Certified SolidWorks Associate credential is described as a strong plus and is required to be in place or obtained within six months. US citizenship and the ability to attain and maintain a government security clearance are required; an active clearance is not required. Domestic or international travel of approximately +/-10% is described as a plus.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a related field, or an associate degree in a related field plus a minimum of five years of directly related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Advanced skills in 3D solid modeling and drafting using SolidWorks.
Advanced skills in 2D drafting using AutoCAD, SMAP 3D, or DraftSight.
Advanced knowledge of conventional engineering drawing practices per ASME Y14 standards.
Intermediate knowledge of GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
Intermediate knowledge of machining operations and shop practices.
Familiarity and working knowledge of PDM file-manager software.
Working knowledge of SolidWorks design software; SolidWorks 2023 is the current software of choice.
Working knowledge of MS Excel and MS Word.
Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence; and speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
Ability to work with probability, statistical inference, plan and solid geometry, trigonometry, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
Ability to follow written, oral, or diagrammed instructions and address problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
US citizenship and ability to attain and maintain a government security clearance; an active clearance is not required.

Nice To Haves

Certified SolidWorks Associate certification is a strong plus, with the posting also stating it must be in place or obtained within six months.
Basic knowledge of ISO and/or AS9100.
Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, 6 Sigma, or Kaizen.

Responsibilities

Perform tolerance analysis on mating parts and apply GD&T to designs.
Apply relevant MIL-STD, ASME, NAS, and DOD standards.
Technically direct work and check drawings produced by lower-level drafters.
Provide CAD software expertise for project problem-solving.
Use AutoCAD or similar software, including SMAP 3D and DraftSight, to prepare 2D drawings when requested.
Support system management, including file maintenance, backup, and storage, as needed.
Follow import/export requirements and consult facility import/export personnel as required.
