About The Position

The Educational Specialist (CTAHR/FCS/4-H) position is with the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience (CTAHR), Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS), 4-H Program, located at the Komohana Extension Office in Hilo, HI. This is an 11-month, permanent, full-time position. The role involves providing guidance and support for the daily operations of planning, implementing, and delivering Hawaii County 4-H programs, following established 4-H program guidelines. This includes supporting East Hawaii County 4-H Program events, day camps, community outreach, activities, workshops, and presentations. The specialist will also support the larger Hawaii County 4-H Program, document program effectiveness with measurable outcomes, and provide training based on program and community needs. Additionally, the role involves guiding local 4-H Programs and volunteer leaders, assisting in leadership development and volunteer recognition, identifying necessary resources, and organizing volunteers. The specialist will also provide guidance to affiliate organizations and committees, promote and develop new 4-H Programs, support the program through various communication channels, and provide information on 4-H Program curricula and resources. Collaboration with UH CTAHR faculty to develop positive youth development skills and support the 4-H program through online resources are also key responsibilities. Communication with faculty, stakeholders, and volunteers to maintain program quality is essential. The role may also involve transporting equipment and materials for events and other 4-H Program activities, with other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Education, Agriculture, Communication, Business, or related fields or related field and 0 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience in N/A; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of outreach and/or community program demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology.
  • Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with outreach and/or community program.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the area of outreach and/or community program.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software.
  • Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner.
  • Requirement may be fulfilled by a valid Hawaii Driver's license (class 3), comparable driver's license, or other means of transportation, which meets position needs.
  • Ability to lift, carry, or otherwise move supplies and equipment up to 40 pounds, with or without assistance or utilizing appropriate methods (e.g., carts, dollies, or team lifts).
  • Ability to meet requirements for working with minors.
  • Ability to work non-standard hours to conduct and attend evening and weekend programs, activities, and meetings as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of Human Development, Education, Agriculture, Youth Development, or related disciplines, including current theories, practices, and research.

Responsibilities

  • Provides guidance and support for daily operations involved in the planning, implementation, and delivery of Hawaii County 4-H programs following 4-H program guidelines.
  • Provide guidance and support to the East Hawaii County 4-H Program events, day camps, community outreach, activities, programs, workshops, and presentations.
  • Support of the larger Hawaii County 4-H Program in accordance with 4-H guidelines and procedures.
  • Documents 4-H program effectiveness as demonstrated with measurable outcomes.
  • Provides training for 4-H Programs based on program and community needs following 4-H program guidelines.
  • Provides guidance to support local 4-H Programs and volunteer leaders, helping them develop organizational skills, grow personally, and understand state and county 4-H Program policies.
  • Communicates with stakeholders while assisting in leadership development and volunteer recognition.
  • Identifies necessary resources to support adult volunteer leaders; and organizes volunteers to assist the county 4-H program needs.
  • Provides guidance and support to county and statewide 4-H Program affiliate organizations and committees as appropriate.
  • Assist to promote, develop, and build on the foundation of new 4-H Programs that are representative of the population.
  • Supports the 4-H Program through clubs and activities via phone calls, emails, and in-person visits as needed.
  • Provides and supports the community with information on, and access to, 4-H Program curricula and resources following 4-H program guidelines.
  • Assists UH CTAHR faculty members to develop positive youth development skills in youth and volunteers following 4-H program guidelines.
  • Supports the 4-H program through online resources such as county websites, social media, newsletters, and other digital platforms following 4-H program guidelines.
  • Provides communications about 4-H Program, activities, and events with 4-H Program faculty, stakeholders, and volunteers to help maintain or improve the quality of the 4-H program.
  • Transports equipment and materials for events and other 4-H Program activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
