About The Position

The College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience (CTAHR), Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS), 4-H Program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa is seeking an Educational Specialist - Livestock. This is a full-time, permanent, 11-month position located in Honolulu, HI. The role involves supporting the design, coordination, and delivery of educational programming for 4-H livestock projects, including shows, judging contests, and workshops. The specialist will also facilitate the Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) program, collaborate with various stakeholders to support livestock events, and provide guidance to 4-H Livestock and Horse Councils. Logistical support for major 4-H livestock events, development of educational materials, data analysis, and online content creation are also key responsibilities. The position requires flexibility in working hours and locations, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, and may involve transporting equipment up to 40 pounds.

Requirements

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Animal Science, Education, Agriculture, Agricultural Education or related field and 0 years of progressively responsible professional experience in N/A; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of outreach and/or community program demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology.
  • Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with outreach and/or community program.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the area of outreach and/or community program.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software.
  • Ability of active listening skills and understanding community concerns, the ability to work independently across multiple locations, and flexibility to adapt to changing community needs.
  • Ability in developing creative solutions to local challenges, commitment to collaborative approaches and shared decision-making, and passion for connecting people and resources to solve problems.
  • Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner.
  • Requirements may be fulfilled by a valid Hawaii Driver's license (class 3), comparable driver's license, or other means of transportation, which meets position needs.
  • Ability to work outside of normal business, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as needed.
  • Ability to lift, carry, or otherwise move supplies and equipment up to 40 pounds, with or without assistance or utilizing appropriate methods (e.g., carts, dollies, or team lifts).
  • Ability to meet requirements for working with minors.

  • Demonstrated professional experience working with livestock such as production, management, or exhibition (horse, etc).
  • Experience working with volunteer-led youth development programs, such as events, camps, and outreach activities.
  • Experience planning, organizing, or implementing educational youth programs such as 4-H or FFA projects or events.
  • Familiarity with conducting or participating in livestock, horse, and/or meat judging contests at the 4-H, FFA, or university levels.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support on design, coordination, and delivery of high-quality educational programming for 4-H livestock projects at the county and state levels, including livestock shows, judging contests, and workshops related to animal husbandry, ethics, and showmanship, under the direction of 4-H program facilitator and/or administrator.
  • Facilitate the annual implementation and certification process for the Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) program, ensuring that all participants achieve proficiency in meat animal quality assurance and animal welfare standards in accordance with 4-H guidelines and procedures.
  • Collaborate with 4-H faculty, county extension agents, statewide staff, local volunteers, and representatives from animal agriculture groups to organize, resource, and support all major 4-H livestock events.
  • Provide guidance and support to the 4-H affiliate State 4-H Livestock Council and related county-level 4-H livestock committees to ensure 4-H livestock program consistency and effectiveness following 4-H program guidelines.
  • Provide guidance and support to the State 4-H Horse Council and county-level 4-H horse committees using 4-H program guidelines, and assisting with the coordination of equine education, events, and exhibitions.
  • Provide logistical support for the annual State 4-H Farm Fair, State 4-H Livestock Show, and State 4-H Horse Show, managing event planning, participant communications, and evaluation.
  • Assist Livestock Agent, 4-H Faculty, and other staff with educational efforts as appropriate.
  • Develop educational resource materials related to livestock science, youth development, and agricultural literacy.
  • Collect, analyze, and report participation data, program outcomes, and impacts for annual reporting and program improvement.
  • Develop and maintain online educational materials, newsletters, and social media content highlighting 4-H livestock activities and learning outcomes.
  • Transports equipment and materials for events and other 4-H Program activities.
