About The Position

The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for multiple Education Coordinator's for the Goose Creek Correctional Center (GCCC) located in Mackenzie Point, Alaska. This role involves teaching and assisting prisoners with educational pursuits, approving and helping with correspondence courses, developing and instructing lesson plans, and counseling prisoners in areas of career development, education, and vocational training. The mission of the State of Alaska Department of Corrections Division of Institutions is to promote public safety by providing secure confinement, access to reformative programs, and offender management planning that promotes successful community reentry.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in education, counseling, social or behavior sciences or a closely related field; AND One year of journey level paraprofessional experience in educational or vocational education programs or services.
  • Extensive background investigation will be required for successful applicants.
  • Working with inmates requires care in observing institution security policies and procedures and may involve personal risk.
  • Some positions perform activities that require bending, crouching, walking or standing for long periods of time.
  • Some work activities involve discomfort or unpleasantness such as moderate noise levels, vibration, dust, dirt or odors associated with operation of equipment and/or tools in performance of duties.
  • Applicants must certify that they have a legal right to accept employment in the United States.
  • Successful candidate must pass a criminal history check.

Responsibilities

  • Teach and assist prisoners with educational pursuits to include ABE, GED, and ESL
  • Approve and help with correspondence courses, including test proctoring
  • Develop, instruct, and reviewing lesson plans for programs in conjunction with the University of Alaska CIOS program
  • Counsel prisoners in areas of career development, education, and vocational training
