About The Position

The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for a Food Service Lead position at the Goose Creek Correctional Center (GCCC) located in Mackenzie Point, Alaska. This role involves directing kitchen staff, including Food Service Journey employees and inmate workers, in the preparation and production of meals for up to 1,500 inmates. The position ensures that stock is pulled for daily pre-set menus and that medically prescribed diets are properly prepared. Additionally, the Food Service Lead directs the production and preparation of all bakery items and oversees and instructs kitchen staff in cooking, baking, sanitation, nutrition, and portion control.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of preparing and serving food for consumption.
  • Shows understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, concern, and politeness to others; develops and maintains effective relationships with others; may include effectively dealing with individuals who are difficult, hostile, or distressed; relates well to people from varied backgrounds and different solutions; is sensitive to cultural diversity, race, gender, disabilities, and other individual differences.
  • Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  • Must pass a criminal history check.
  • Must be fingerprinted.
  • Must obtain a security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) to use the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN). DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice.

Responsibilities

  • Direct kitchen staff, including Food Service Journey employees and inmate workers, in the preparation and production of meals for up to 1,500 inmates.
  • Ensure stock is pulled for the daily pre-set menus.
  • Ensure medically prescribed diets are properly prepared for each meal service.
  • Direct the production and preparation of all bakery items.
  • Oversee and instruct kitchen staff in the areas of cooking, baking, sanitation, nutrition, and portion control.
