About The Position

This program is designed to provide DVM students with practical, hands-on experience in a contemporary veterinary practice. It aims to contribute to your practice-readiness and prepare you for delivering better care after graduation. The externships are flexible, ranging from two to eight weeks, and typically last two to three weeks. The schedule includes days, evenings, and weekends. Externs will practice problem-solving, technical, and communication skills under veterinary supervision, participating in all aspects of patient care.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in an accredited DVM program.
  • Be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Carry professional liability insurance (e.g., AVMA PLIT).
  • Submit a certificate of current coverage with your application.

Nice To Haves

  • Review the Veterinary Practice Act regarding the scope of duties and required supervision.
  • Be familiar with the type and degree of veterinary supervision that is required.

Responsibilities

  • Gather histories
  • Perform physical examinations
  • Develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans
  • Scrub in to surgery
  • Assist in the management of medical cases
  • Provide wellness care
  • Develop client communication skills
  • Polish technical skills
  • Produce appropriate medical records (SOAPs) within the time limits of daily practice

Benefits

  • A stipend of $250 per week will be provided.
