About The Position

This program is designed to provide DVM students with valuable off-campus educational experiences in a contemporary veterinary practice. The externship aims to contribute to your practice-readiness, preparing you to deliver better care after graduation. Externships can range from two to eight weeks, typically lasting two to three weeks, and include days, evenings, and weekends. The program allows students, under veterinary supervision, to practice problem-solving, technical, and communication skills. Externs will work alongside the veterinary team and participate in all aspects of patient care. A stipend of $250 per week will be provided.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in an accredited DVM program.
  • Be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Carry professional liability insurance (AVMA PLIT liability insurance is free for all student members of the AVMA).
  • Submit a certificate of coverage with your application.

Nice To Haves

  • Review the Veterinary Practice Act in regard to the scope of duties that may be performed.
  • Be familiar with the type and degree of veterinary supervision that is required.

Responsibilities

  • Gather histories
  • Perform physical examinations
  • Develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans
  • Scrub in to surgery
  • Assist in the management of medical cases
  • Provide wellness care
  • Develop client communication skills
  • Polish technical skills
  • Produce appropriate medical records (SOAPs) within the time limits of daily practice
