This position provides technical expertise and coordination for transportation programs involving multiple design and advanced building construction projects, construction of transportation systems, traffic operations, maintenance of highways and facilities, or bridge inspection and appraisal in accordance with Department standards. Assists with project planning and oversight, and the development of policies and procedures for area of responsibility. Work requires contact with governmental officials, consultants, contractors and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence. Essential Duties: The Essential Duties of a Transportation Specialist III, IV, or V include: Assists in overseeing project design/drafting involving design calculations and sketches of plans, layouts and typical sections. Coordinates compilation of complete plan packages for submission to the responsible engineer or architect for review and signature. Develops and prepares consultant work orders and agreements. Develops site layouts utilizing engineering workstations and software. Performs data collection, evaluations, analyses, studies, inspections, forecasts, assessments and plan development. Represents the Department at various meetings. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires you to drive for TxDOT. Additional duties for a Transportation Specialist IV or V include: Evaluates and analyzes highly complex design/drafting issues. Assists in overseeing project design/drafting involving design calculations and sketches of plans, layouts and typical sections. Assists in planning, developing, administering and monitoring district maintenance contracts and service agreements. Assists in prioritizing and scheduling projects. Coordinates compilation of complete plan packages for submission to the responsible engineer or architect for review and signature. Reviews and oversees plan packages submitted by consultants. Serves as program coordinator responsible for coordination of highly advanced engineering/architectural projects from initiation to completion. Serves as technical member on transportation-related projects. Additional duties for a Transportation Specialist V: Oversees design/drafting work among TxDOT entities, consultants and contractors. Oversees project assignments, determines work requirements to complete project plans and coordinates scheduling to accommodate projects already underway. Oversees project design/drafting involving design calculations and sketches of plans, layouts and typical sections. Evaluates and analyzes highly complex design/drafting issues.
