About The Position

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Pennsylvania Electric Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. The Distribution System Operator I works from Reading, Pennsylvania, monitoring and supporting the day-to-day operation of the regional distribution system. The operator responds to outages and abnormal conditions, analyzes system disturbances, coordinates restoration and equipment outages, and communicates system events to appropriate personnel. The role uses distribution operations systems and communications equipment and coordinates switching work with field personnel. The position includes training and development to progress to the Regional Distribution System Operator level. Work may require nights, weekends, extended days, or scheduled days off when system or weather conditions warrant. The employee must reside within a 60-minute proximity of the reporting location. This is a non-exempt position.

Requirements

Associate degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related certification from an ABET-accredited institution; alternatively, at least four years of related work experience demonstrating an understanding of distribution-system operations.
Knowledge of, or ability to learn, transmission and distribution operations, maintenance, and construction practices, procedures, work methods, materials, equipment, and tools.
Ability to perform effectively in problem solving, multitasking, and teamwork.
Ability to prioritize work for efficient and safe operations.
Reading and comprehension skills to interpret switching requests, engineering drawings, schematics, equipment manuals, standards, and procedures used to develop distribution switching orders.
Ability to develop, collect, organize, and analyze information from varied sources to prepare switching orders and recommendations.
Effective oral and written communication skills for working with customers, supervisors, peers, employees, and contractors involved in T&D facility construction, operation, and maintenance.
Questioning attitude, willingness to learn and produce results, relationship-building ability, and maturity to exercise independent judgment on moderately complex projects and assignments.
Interpersonal and analytical skills to make quick assessments and well-considered decisions requiring independent judgment.
Knowledge of, or ability to learn, specific mainframe and PC applications.
Ability to remain professional and calm in a high-stress, high-volume work environment.
Must reside within 60 minutes of the reporting location.
Ability to work nights, weekends, extended days, or scheduled days off when system or weather conditions warrant.

Responsibilities

Monitor day-to-day operations of the regional distribution system.
Restore outages during emergency or abnormal conditions and document distribution-system activity accurately and promptly.
Recommend operational improvements and communicate system events to appropriate personnel.
Provide effective internal and external customer service.
Operate SCADA, EMS, PowerOn OMS, EDOA, RDO notifications, radio, and telephone systems.
Analyze and act promptly on system disturbances to restore the system to a normal configuration.
Provide technical analysis, monitor systems, and schedule and authorize distribution equipment outages and load transfers.
Develop detailed scenarios to identify operating problems caused by contingency outages.
Assign and direct switching activities and work assignments for field personnel.
Monitor system and weather conditions.
Coordinate staffing by calling additional resources to handle emergencies.
Complete training and development toward the Regional Distribution System Operator level.
Maintain a basic understanding of bargaining unit agreements with field labor.
Work nights, weekends, extended days, or scheduled days off when system or weather conditions warrant.
