About The Position

WELLSTAR is a high-growth SaaS company focused on reshaping healthcare through digital enablement. They are seeking a Director, UI/UX Design to lead the design function for the Clinical Platform Group. This role involves leading and developing an established team of designers, owning the quality and consistency of the end-to-end product experience, and setting the design direction for a modern, AI-first EMR platform. The position will strengthen user research and design practices, ensuring clinician needs are central to product evolution. The Director will collaborate with Product and Engineering leadership to bring structure and consistency to the product development lifecycle. This is a remote-first role open to candidates anywhere in Canada, with occasional travel.

Requirements

Experience leading and developing product designers, including coaching, providing feedback, supporting career development, and managing performance.
Ability to assess the strengths of an established team, build trust, and create clarity and support for designers.
Experience designing and shipping complex, workflow-heavy software where usability, accuracy, and attention to detail are critical.
Strong design judgment with the ability to critically evaluate work, challenge assumptions, and raise the quality and consistency of the user experience.
Experience improving how a design team operates through stronger discovery and research practices, critique and review, design systems, handoffs, or design QA.
Ability to introduce structure without unnecessary process and measure the impact of changes.
Experience working closely with Product and Engineering teams in an agile product environment.
Understanding of how design fits into discovery, backlog refinement, sprint planning, development, and release.
Ability to influence peers and senior stakeholders, communicate design decisions and trade-offs clearly, and build alignment around the user experience.
Comfort exploring AI-assisted design tools and a thoughtful perspective on their potential to improve speed and effectiveness without compromising craft or consistency.
Adaptability to design for user needs rather than adhering to a single definition of good UX.
Ability to work with complex, information-dense experiences and balance user needs, accessibility, technical constraints, and environmental realities.

Nice To Haves

Experience designing AI or LLM-powered products, including human-in-the-loop experiences.
Experience in healthcare, EMR/EHR products, or another regulated environment.

Responsibilities

Lead and develop the design team by coaching and supporting designers, creating clear ownership, providing feedback, and fostering growth.
Foster a collaborative critique culture and create conditions for the team to consistently deliver high-quality work.
Own the end-to-end product experience, ensuring quality, consistency, and coherence across clinical and administrative workflows.
Establish and uphold high design standards, incorporating accessibility and clinical safety considerations.
Shape AI-assisted experiences by setting the design direction for AI integration, including how suggestions are surfaced, confidence and provenance are communicated, and clinician control is maintained.
Ensure AI-enabled experiences are practical, intuitive, and designed around the realities of clinical care.
Strengthen collaboration between Design, Product, and Engineering by partnering with leaders to integrate design into problem definition, discovery, refinement, and delivery.
Improve handoffs and feedback loops to ensure clear understanding of requirements, designs, and intended experiences.
Evolve design practices and systems by refining the design process from intake to QA, keeping it structured without unnecessary complexity.
Champion the design system, patterns, documentation, and tools that promote efficiency and consistency.
Establish a sustainable approach to user research, including interviews and engagement with clinics.
Ensure user research insights are shared effectively across Design, Product, and Engineering.
Translate learnings from clinicians and customers into meaningful product improvements and roadmap adjustments.
