About The Position

Sophinea is an AI, data, and analytics firm in Manassas, Virginia, serving federal and commercial clients since 2018. The company builds AI products, including Halo, a secure AI and analytics platform. The UI/UX Design Intern will help shape how people interact with AI and data products, including dashboards and mobile and web applications, working alongside engineers on real products. The internship is paid, part-time, and semester-long, requiring about 10–15 hours per week. It is hybrid in Manassas, Virginia, with on-site collaboration and remote days. The intern may take part in team standups, design work in Figma, usability sessions, and design reviews with the engineering team.

Requirements

Currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's program in UX, interaction design, graphic design, HCI, or a related field.
A portfolio showing the design process, not just final screens.
Working knowledge of Figma or a similar tool.
Understanding of usability principles and accessibility basics, including WCAG.
Clear communication skills and comfort receiving feedback.
Ability to work on-site in Manassas on hybrid days.

Nice To Haves

Experience designing dashboards or data-heavy interfaces.
Familiarity with Apple Human Interface Guidelines or Material Design.
Basic HTML/CSS.
Interest in AI products and how people build trust in them.

Responsibilities

Design wireframes, user flows, and high-fidelity mockups for web and mobile products.
Build interactive prototypes to test ideas before engineering begins.
Conduct lightweight user research, including interviews and usability tests, and synthesize findings.
Contribute components and patterns to the design system.
Design dashboards and data visualizations that make complex information easy to read.
Hand off designs to developers and review what ships.
