Director / Senior Director, Marketplace Strategy & Operations

GrouponChicago, IL
$190,000 - $280,000Hybrid

About The Position

This role is responsible for shaping how Groupon’s marketplace performs for customers, merchants, and the business. The individual will identify high-priority opportunities, determine focus areas, and lead initiatives to achieve measurable results. The work involves improving merchant supply, strengthening deal quality, and evaluating pricing and take-rate trade-offs. The position requires combining independent problem-solving, rigorous analysis, and cross-functional leadership to drive business improvements. It is a hands-on leadership role where the individual will lead analysis and work with senior functional partners to implement recommendations and achieve measurable results.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 8+ years in Strategy & Operations, business operations, consulting, corporate strategy, or another analytically demanding operating role
  • For Director: owned complex initiatives end to end, including implementation and measurable results.
  • For Senior Director: owned a comparable business or agenda at scale (e.g., a P&L, a function, a multi-year commercial agenda) where you carried the decisions and the outcome, and settled trade-offs directly with senior leaders.
  • Strong analytical and commercial judgment; comfortable working directly with data, quick to challenge assumptions, able to decide with incomplete information.
  • Ability to learn unfamiliar areas quickly and move from ambiguity to grounded decisions at pace, with the judgment to know when an 80/20 answer is sufficient and when deeper work is required.
  • A track record of leading work across functions and influencing senior stakeholders without reporting-line authority.
  • AI fluency: experience using AI to investigate problems, prototype, and automate, and the ability to validate its output.
  • Clear executive communication: concise recommendations, explicit trade-offs, constructive challenge.
  • Marketplace or technology experience is useful.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior B2B sales experience is not required.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and prioritize opportunities by diagnosing marketplace performance, sizing opportunities, and determining focus areas across merchant supply, customer value, sales productivity, and operating efficiency.
  • Own initiatives from diagnosis through results, including defining the problem, establishing the business case, deciding the course of action, and leading implementation with relevant teams.
  • Use analysis to guide decisions by building and pressure-testing models, investigating underlying data, and evaluating commercial trade-offs.
  • Lead decisions across functions by bringing senior stakeholders to agreement on priorities, trade-offs, responsibilities, and delivery commitments, resolving obstacles, and keeping implementation moving.
  • Establish how success will be measured by defining baselines, targets, and expected impact, then tracking delivery and adjusting as needed.
  • Test, launch, and scale improvements by designing and running pilots, measuring results, refining the approach, and turning successful changes into repeatable processes and tools with clear ownership for ongoing operation.
  • Use AI to investigate, prototype, and automate recurring work, while also validating its output.
