About The Position

Magic Cabinet ("MC") is a philanthropic foundation that seeks to fundamentally redefine how philanthropy and nonprofits partner for sustainable and thriving communities. We’re looking for a Director of Philanthropic Solutions to lead Magic Cabinet's strategy to aggregate aligned philanthropic capital and move it into community with support from our grantmaking platform. Reporting to Magic Cabinet’s Chief Strategy Officer, the Director of Philanthropic Solutions is responsible for cultivating relationships with high-net-worth donors, family foundations, donor-advised fund (DAF) holders, and aligned institutional funders, and converting those relationships into committed capital that flows through Magic Cabinet to nonprofit partners. Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to bring the perspective of historically underserved or marginalized communities into rooms with wealth holders and institutional funders, grounded in lived experience, sustained community relationships, or both. The Director must be able to hold both spaces credibly: the philanthropic sector and the communities Magic Cabinet exists to serve.
  • Demonstrated track record of cultivating and closing significant philanthropic commitments, ideally seven figures and above, from high-net-worth individuals, family foundations, and/or institutional funders.
  • An established, activatable network of relationships with philanthropists, foundation leaders, DAF sponsors, financial advisors, and/or philanthropic-serving organizations.
  • At least ten years of experience in fundraising, philanthropic advising, business development, or institutional advancement, with at least five years in a senior capacity.
  • Experience building a function, team, or initiative from the ground up, including hiring and developing direct reports.
  • Genuine alignment with community-centered, trust-based philanthropy and the ability to speak credibly to wealth holders without compromising those values or Magic Cabinet's model.
  • Excellent leadership, project management, and relationship-building skills.
  • Comfortable presenting in front of groups, with excellent interpersonal, writing, and public speaking skills, and a high degree of emotional intelligence.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and monitor budgets.
  • Ability to commit to regional and domestic travel.

Nice To Haves

  • A strong professional network in the venture capital or impact investing sector, in addition to philanthropy.
  • Experience working with DAF sponsors or financial advisory firms on capital channeling.
  • Consulting experience.
  • Experience designing or leading philanthropic convenings or peer learning communities.

Responsibilities

  • Leads Magic Cabinet's strategy to aggregate aligned philanthropic capital and move it into community with support from our grantmaking platform.
  • Cultivates relationships with high-net-worth donors, family foundations, donor-advised fund (DAF) holders, and aligned institutional funders, and converting those relationships into committed capital that flows through Magic Cabinet to nonprofit partners.
  • Builds and leads a growing team.
  • Establishes Magic Cabinet as a recognized voice in the trust-based venture philanthropy field.
  • Partners with Senior Leadership to drive Magic Cabinet's outside capital mobilization from $1M in 2026 to $100M+ annually by 2030.
  • Identifies, cultivates, and closes commitments from aligned philanthropists, family foundations, and DAF holders to channel capital through Magic Cabinet's grantmaking pools, including the Community Advisory Fund.
  • Develops and executes a multi-year capital mobilization strategy with annual targets, scaling from $1M in 2026 to $100M+ in committed annual capital by 2030.
  • Partners with financial advisors, DAF sponsors, and wealth management firms to build sustained pipelines of aligned capital into Magic Cabinet.
  • Leads the full funder journey from initial relationship through multi-year capital commitment, including stewardship and ongoing partnership.
  • Develops and refines compelling materials, proposals, and offerings that translate Magic Cabinet's model into clear value for prospective funders.
  • Positions Magic Cabinet as a recognized voice on trust-based venture philanthropy through speaking, writing, and convening.
  • Represents Magic Cabinet actively in philanthropic-serving organizations, peer networks, and sector convenings.
  • Hosts and designs convenings that introduce aligned funders to Magic Cabinet's model and build community among them.
  • Advocates for Magic Cabinet's approach to community-centered philanthropy in the broader sector.
  • Stays current on philanthropic trends, research, and emerging models, and translates that learning into Magic Cabinet's strategy.
  • Develops and leads the Philanthropic Solutions team.
  • Sets team strategy, goals, and performance standards aligned with organizational capital aggregation targets.
  • Coaches and develops team members, supporting their growth and the long-term capacity of the department.
  • Fosters a team culture rooted in Magic Cabinet's values of trust, equity, and ongoing partnership.
  • Refines and implements philanthropic advising offerings as a pathway to deeper capital commitments.
  • Develops strategies to move philanthropic clients along a ladder of engagement, from initial learning through committed multi-year partnership with Magic Cabinet.
  • Cultivates and maintains open, transparent, and supportive relationships with philanthropic clients.
  • Collaborates with Program, Research, Operations, and Platform teams to provide values-based support to funders, ranging from customized grantmaking models to direct grantmaking services.
  • Partners closely with the CEO, COO, and CSO to establish capital strategy, organizational alignment, and internal communication.
  • Collaborates with Program, Research, Operations and Platform leads to ensure funder offerings reflect Magic Cabinet's practice and learning.
  • Attends select meetings, retreats, and donor events as an ambassador of Magic Cabinet, its partners, and its values.
  • Documents philanthropic client activities and capital pipeline for internal management, learning, and iteration.
  • Utilizes standard business software, including spreadsheets, presentation software, project management tools, video conferencing, and collaborative documents.
  • Participates in internal meetings, training, and self and peer-review processes.
  • Participates in operational systems and procedures, such as expense tracking and documentation.
  • Contributes to the betterment of Magic Cabinet's procedures and processes.
  • Contributes to and participates in data collection, evaluation and learning toward the mission.
  • Other duties as assigned.
