About The Position

Leads the Hunger Relief Program by managing a high-volume kitchen, directing and overseeing paid kitchen staff, contracted kitchen staff, and volunteers in the preparation of nutritious meals. Oversees all Hunger Relief operations; and is responsible for the management of all outgoing meals.

Requirements

  • Post secondary education or 5 years of hospitality or food service management experience.
  • Experience managing a high-volume kitchen and managing people with varying food service experience.
  • ServSafe Manager Certification or be obtained within 1 month of employment.
  • ServSafe Instructor/Proctor Certification or be obtained within 3 months employment.
  • Professional knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of food service.
  • One to two years management experience, training, or teaching experience a plus.
  • Possess good communication skills with the ability to give clear directions.
  • Must have initiative, work well under pressure, stay organized while multi-tasking, demonstrate time management skills, and possess extreme patience and persistence.
  • Ability to represent Second Helpings in community events, speaking engagements, and Second Helpings fundraising activities, speaking about Second Helpings in an educated way about mission, operations, and projects.
  • Must be interested in hunger/human services and have a demonstrated ability to work well with people of all backgrounds, cultural groups, and economic levels.
  • Must be sociable and enjoy close collaboration with others yet have the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Regularly required to stand for long periods of time; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, with assistance if needed.
  • Vision (with correction if necessary) capabilities include close and distance, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Exposure to wet, humid and/or extreme heat conditions.
  • Occasional exposure to fumes, flame, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, risk of electric shock, and moderate to high noise levels.

Responsibilities

  • Select, train, supervise, and evaluate Hunger Relief staff. Continuously develops and mentors staff, collaborates in cross training efforts with other departments, sets goals, and manages and reports on them.
  • Create and implement monthly Hunger Relief skills training.
  • Ensure meals meet the dietary needs of partner agencies in coordination with Director of Partner Relations.
  • Explore, and implement when appropriate, automation and AI into the Hunger Relief production.
  • Ensure the planning, coordination, and preparation of nutritious meals for partner agencies is carried out appropriately.
  • Ensure that the Hunger Relief Manager and Sr. Kitchen Coordinator meet meal delivery schedules, collaborating with Director of Partner Relations and Sr. Director of Food Rescue.
  • Ensure that the highest food safety standards for Hunger Relief program are met. Liaison with the local health department for kitchen inspections and updates and changes in local health regulations.
  • Ensure that Hunger Relief Kitchen Coordinators satisfactorily coordinate the work of Hunger Relief Kitchen volunteers and contracted workers engaged in preparing meals with adherence to quality and food safety standards.
  • Oversee routine cleaning and maintenance of Hunger Relief kitchen, dish room, coolers and freezers, and any other related equipment. Coordinate preventative maintenance schedule and repair of equipment with the Facilities Manager.
  • Oversee inventory of donated Hunger Relief ingredients and responsible for ordering any food supplies needed to complete outgoing meals. Continuous walk throughs to establish critical action of food usage and organization.
  • Communicate and coordinate with the Food Rescue and Hub teams to monitor incoming food items quality and usage destinations.
  • Maintain, update, and document Hunger Relief procedures for relevance and accuracy. Notify kitchen and warehouse staff and volunteers of appropriate changes/editions. Update procedures to meet strategic and organizational goals. Creates and enforces opening and closing procedures.
  • Maintain ServSafe Manager Instructor and Proctor certifications. Lead ServSafe Manager class and proctor exam as needed.
  • Ensure a daily lunch is provided for volunteers, students, temporary staff, guests and staff.
  • Collaborates and participates in Second Helpings fundraising, in-house events, speaking engagements and media events as needed.
  • Coach and develop the Hunger Relief Manager.
  • Create, network and grow relationships with other food rescue/hunger relief organizations.
  • Lead the development of the Hunger Relief budget and equipment replacement schedule. Review monthly.
  • Assist and collaborate in other areas as requested and when time permits.
