About The Position

The Marketing Communications Director, for Surface Sciences is a senior marketing leader responsible for shaping and executing the global promotional marketing and communications strategy in support of the division’s growth objectives. This role leads a global promotional marketing organization, including three regional marketing managers (IMEA, APAC, LATAM) and three global marketing managers spanning Performance Coatings, Beauty & Home, and Pharma/Nutra, as well as additional team members reporting through these managers. As a key member of the Surface Sciences leadership team, the Director acts as a strategic partner to the business—translating strategy into integrated marketing and communications programs that build awareness, generate demand, strengthen customer relationships, and contribute to commercial pipeline growth. The role works closely with Strategic Marketing, Sales, and Corporate MarComm to ensure alignment across portfolios, regions, and the full customer journey.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in promotional marketing or marketing communications, preferably within B2B, specialty chemicals, life sciences, or related industries.
  • Experience must be inclusive of at least 3 years of leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated success leading global and regional teams, including indirect management in a matrixed environment.
  • Proven track record of delivering integrated marketing programs that contribute to demand creation and commercial pipeline impact.
  • Strong executive presence with the ability to influence, advise, and partner with senior business leaders.
  • Exceptional communication, presentation, and storytelling skills.
  • Strong analytical, financial, and project management capabilities.
  • Willingness to travel internationally (approximately 20%).

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a senior marketing leader for the Surface Sciences division, contributing to business strategy, growth initiatives, and leadership discussions.
  • Translate division and business-unit strategies into clear, differentiated promotional marketing and communications plans.
  • Partner closely with Strategic Marketing to align value propositions, portfolio narratives, and go-to-market priorities.
  • Provide strategic marketing counsel to commercial and functional leaders, ensuring promotional efforts support growth, demand creation, and pipeline contribution.
  • Act as a communications counselor to the business President and members of his team as they engage with employees, customers and prospects.
  • Lead, coach, and develop a global promotional marketing organization consisting of direct and indirect reports across regions and market segments.
  • Establish clear priorities, operating rhythms, and accountability across teams to ensure alignment, consistency, and effective execution.
  • Support talent development, succession planning, and capability growth within the promotional marketing organization.
  • Foster collaboration across regional and global teams to leverage best practices and drive efficiency.
  • Oversee development and execution of integrated promotional marketing plans aligned to business and STRAP priorities, including: Global and regional promotional campaigns, Lead generation programs and CRM-enabled campaign execution, Thought leadership and advocacy initiatives, Events, conferences, and trade show strategy and execution, Customer marketing programs that strengthen key commercial relationships.
  • Ensure consistent application of brand standards, product brand architecture, and messaging frameworks across all activities.
  • Lead internal and external communications for the Surface Sciences division, including leadership messaging, town halls, and employee communications.
  • Oversee industry public relations and advocacy efforts to increase visibility, credibility, and share of voice across priority markets.
  • Guide development of content and messaging that positions Surface Sciences as a trusted, innovative partner across Performance Coatings, Beauty & Home, and Pharma/Nutra.
  • Own the Marcomm budget for the division and ensure investment aligns to business priorities and growth opportunities.
  • Establish KPIs and performance metrics to assess campaign effectiveness, lead generation, demand creation, and commercial contribution.
  • Use performance data and insights to optimize marketing strategies, drive continuous improvement, and support pipeline growth objectives.
  • Partner closely with Sales, Product Management, Technology, Commercial Excellence, and Corporate MarComm teams to deliver integrated, end-to-end marketing programs.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate brand governance and evolving product and portfolio branding standards.
  • Champion disciplined planning, execution, and measurement across the promotional marketing organization.
