About The Position

Arizona State University's Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation (MLFC) is seeking a Director of Learning Design to join the Office of Design and Learning. This team focuses on creating learning environments, experiences, and pathways that provide access to the university's core knowledge. The Director will be a key member of the Office of Design and Learning leadership team, collaborating with faculty, staff, administrators, and external partners to enhance teaching and learning excellence across various educational contexts. This includes shaping the design, delivery, and continuous improvement of learning experiences for degree programs, online learning, professional development, microcredentials, and new educational opportunities. The role involves navigating the impact of generative AI and other emerging technologies on teaching, learning, assessment, and educational practices. The ideal candidate is a collaborative, people-focused, and systems-minded leader who values both people and processes. The Director will lead and mentor a team of learning design professionals while actively contributing to the design and advancement of learning experiences, organizational systems, and partnerships within the college. Working with university colleagues, the Director will foster an environment where innovative, learner-centered, and evidence-informed work can thrive at scale.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field including two (2) years managerial experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills.
  • Ability to manage and adjust to changing priorities, including handling time-sensitive tasks and resolving conflicts.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or higher in instructional design, learning design, learning sciences, educational technology, higher education, organizational learning, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and developing teams responsible for learning design, instructional design, educational innovation, faculty support, or related functions.
  • Demonstrated experience partnering with faculty members, academic leaders, and subject matter experts to design, develop, and improve learning experiences across multiple educational contexts or delivery modalities.
  • Demonstrated experience developing or improving organizational systems, processes, or practices that support effective and scalable educational design and delivery.
  • Demonstrated experience exploring, evaluating, or implementing generative AI and other emerging technologies in teaching, learning, learning design, or knowledge work environments.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Office of Design and Learning team, faculty members, and academic leaders to advance learning design strategies that support excellence, access, and impact across academic and learning enterprise offerings.
  • Lead and support the instructional design team in designing, developing, implementing, and continuously improving learning environments, experiences, and pathways for learners and audiences.
  • Help the college respond to the evolving impact of generative AI and emerging technologies on teaching, learning, assessment, and educational design by promoting thoughtful exploration, evidence-informed practice, and responsible implementation.
  • Promote learning design practices grounded in learning sciences, accessibility, inclusion, and continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to professional learning opportunities that strengthen teaching and learning practice across the college.
  • Serve as a member of the Office of Design and Learning leadership team, contributing to strategic planning, priority setting, organizational improvement, and operational decision-making.
  • Collaborate with college and university partners to identify, evaluate, and implement systems, processes, and practices that support effective use of generative AI and other emerging technologies in teaching, learning, and learning design.
  • Use data, feedback, and organizational priorities to inform decision-making, assess impact, and support continuous improvement.
  • Lead implementation of initiatives that strengthen organizational effectiveness and support the adoption of innovative practices, technologies, and approaches to teaching and learning.
  • Lead, support, and develop a team of learning design professionals through coaching, mentoring, performance management, and professional learning opportunities.
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and people-centered culture that values inquiry, innovation, shared ownership, and continuous growth.
  • Create conditions that enable individuals and teams to contribute their expertise, collaborate effectively, and achieve collective goals.
  • Build and sustain collaborative partnerships with faculty members, staff, administrators, and external organizations to advance teaching and learning excellence.
  • Represent the Office of Design and Learning within the college, across the university, and in relevant professional communities.
  • Promote scholarly inquiry, reflective practice, and the dissemination of knowledge related to learning design, teaching innovation, and organizational improvement.
  • Advocate for learner-centered design, teaching excellence, and continuous improvement across educational contexts.
