About The Position

Reporting to the Office of the President and Chief Executive Officer, the Director, Governance and Board Operations serves as a strategic leader and trusted advisor responsible for advancing the effectiveness, integrity, and continuous improvement of the ACGME’s governance framework. The role partners closely with the President and Chief Executive Officer, Board leadership, Executive Leadership Team, legal counsel, and other stakeholders to support governance responsibilities while ensuring alignment with organizational priorities, requirements, and best practices. As the organization’s central governance resource, the Director fosters effective decision-making, strengthens Board and committee engagement, and drives governance excellence through thoughtful policy stewardship, process improvement, and strategic oversight. The Director also leads ACGME staff support of governance functions (i.e., Board Liaison and Board Committee staff) and serves as a key collaborator across the organization to promote transparency, accountability, and operational effectiveness. This position combines leadership with hands-on execution and offers a unique opportunity to shape and strengthen the governance infrastructure of a mission-driven organization dedicated to improving health care through graduate medical education.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Seven or more years of progressively responsible experience supporting governance, compliance, policy administration, accreditation, legal, association, non-profit, or higher education functions.
  • At least three years of supervisory or management experience.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States (US) on a full-time basis. The ACGME will not provide employment sponsorship for this position (e.g., H-1B Visa or other US employment authorization).

Responsibilities

  • Serve as administrative advisor to the Governance Committee of the Board of Directors.
  • Serve as administrative advisor to the Policies and Procedures Advisory Committee and lead the Policy Development Team in reviewing and proposing policy updates, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and legal considerations.
  • Provide strategic guidance regarding governance best practices, effectiveness, and governance-related policies and procedures.
  • Oversee Board standing committee staff operations to ensure consistency and efficiency.
  • Partner with Board leadership, the President and Chief Executive Officer, and other executive leaders on governance priorities and initiatives.
  • Lead periodic reviews of governance structures, committee charters, bylaws, and governance practices, recommending improvements as appropriate.
  • Plan and implement Board member lifecycle activities, including recruitment, onboarding, orientation, continuing education, and evaluation.
  • Maintain and oversee updates to organizational Bylaws and governance documents.
  • Lead systematic review and maintenance of organizational policies and procedures.
  • Establish and manage a policy review schedule to ensure policies remain current, consistent, and aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Partner with executive leaders, committee leaders, and legal counsel to identify, prioritize, and implement policy revisions.
  • Oversee maintenance of the organization's Manual of Policies and Procedures and related governance documentation.
  • Administer conflict-of-interest and duality-of-interest disclosure processes for Board members, committee members, volunteers, and staff members.
  • Manage annual disclosure collection, review submissions against established criteria, and identify matters requiring additional review.
  • Prepare analyses and recommendations regarding potential conflicts for leadership and governance committee consideration.
  • Monitor compliance with conflict-of-interest requirements and maintain related records and documentation.
  • Administer organizational appeals processes and ensure adherence to established policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate preparation of appeal records and supporting materials.
  • Convene Appeals Panels as needed and coordinate panel member selection, orientation, scheduling, and support.
  • Serve as primary staff liaison throughout the appeals process and communicate outcomes as appropriate.
  • Maintain appeals-related policies, procedures, records, and training materials.
  • Participate in oversight of Board preparation, meeting execution, and follow-up activities.
  • Establish standards, timelines, and quality expectations for Board and committee materials and communications.
  • Ensure effective coordination among Board-facing staff members supporting Board and committee activities.
  • Provide governance expertise and operational guidance related to Board processes and committee administration.
  • Extend Board liaison responsibility to include ACGME International, as assigned.
  • Identify opportunities to align governance practices, resources, and support structures across domestic and international governance functions.
  • Supervise staff members directly supporting governance and board operations.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, performance management, and professional development for assigned staff members.
  • Establish priorities, allocate work, and ensure effective execution of responsibilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
