About The Position

We are seeking a detail-oriented Director of Accounting to take ownership of the financial reporting process and payroll oversight. In this role, you will bridge the gap between operational accounting and high-level financial reporting. You will bring deep expertise across financial reporting, technical accounting, IPO readiness, payroll management, SOX compliance, and mergers & acquisitions. You will work with outsourced team members to manage complex accounting and our outsourced payroll providers. This is a critical role for someone strong in US GAAP who enjoys process improvement and cross-functional collaboration.

Requirements

  • CPA (active license) required with bachelor’s degree in accounting.
  • Renewable industry experience required.
  • 10-15+ years of progressive accounting experience required with a mix of public and private companies preferred.
  • Big 4 or Tier II Audit firm experience is required.
  • Strong technical accounting skills, thorough understanding of SOX compliance and IPO readiness.
  • Advanced level in Excel, familiarity with cloud-based HRIS/payroll platforms (like Rippling), and familiarity with AI tools.
  • Deep understanding of US GAAP, specifically regarding revenue recognition, payroll and wage/bonus accruals, intercompany transactions, and financial reporting.
  • Experience managing and developing offshore teams, collaborating with internal departments (FP&A, HR, TX Operations) to optimize automated process workflows, and partnering closely with external US and international payroll vendors.

Nice To Haves

  • Merger and acquisition experience is a plus.
  • Experience establishing internal financial controls and QA oversight for multi-state US payroll operations is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical accounting assessments for new standard implementations and work with technical accounting consultants to draft auditor-ready technical accounting policies and position memos.
  • Collaborate with the FP&A team to ensure proper General Ledger coding and department allocation on financial statements; implement process improvements to ensure coding accuracy at the source.
  • Prepare intercompany entries with the help of outsourced team members based on specific agreements, ensuring full understanding of both Tax and US GAAP implications.
  • Review quarterly reports for debt covenants and assist in the preparation of audited financial statements and quarterly investor reporting.
  • Oversee the preparation and review of stock-based compensation accounting, including valuation of equity awards, calculation of grant-date fair value, determination of requisite service periods, and recognition of compensation expense in accordance with ASC 718.
  • Execute a comprehensive review and final approval of the bi-monthly US payroll register prior to funding, serving as the final set of eyes to spot errors before the money leaves the bank.
  • Perform a high-level review of the outsourced Canadian payroll to verify headcount and total funding accuracy.
  • Maintain proper internal controls and segregation of duties for the payroll cycle by reviewing and validating transaction inputs initiated by People Operations, including hours worked, overtime, bonuses, commissions, retroactive pay, off-cycle payments, and leave pay adjustments.
  • Own the payroll General Ledger mapping within Rippling. Partner with FP&A on departmental coding, and prepare all payroll-related journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end bonus/wage accruals.
  • Oversee the execution of new state and provincial payroll tax registrations and ensure proper compliance and configuration within our payroll systems.
  • Partner closely with the People Operations team and external vendors to continuously evolve our payroll processes and tooling, actively seeking opportunities for increased efficiencies, data accuracy, and system automation.
  • Support annual audits with external auditors and complete internal control testing on a quarterly basis.
  • Ensure compliance with sales tax and franchise/business tax, including the preparation and filing of reports as needed.
  • Work with the Controller to review partnership entity taxes and issuances of K-1s.
  • Prepare process flow documentation and coordinate walkthroughs with the auditors.
  • Develop and maintain a risk-control matrix for comprehensive internal control implementation and compliance.
  • Review and approve journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations prepared by outsourced team members.
  • Manage the insurance renewal process, prepare files for renewals, issue Certificates of Insurance (COI) as requested by business stakeholders, and file claims.
  • Partner with other departments to obtain necessary information for the month-end close and collaborate with the Controller on ad-hoc tasks and reporting needs.
