About The Position

The Diesel Operator, within the Office of Facilities’ Energy & Utilities division, operates, monitors, and performs basic maintenance on diesel generators and associated fuel systems to help ensure reliable power supply across AUB and AUBMC facilities, especially during outages and emergencies. The role includes operating generators and medium-voltage switchgears, monitoring equipment and operating conditions, recording operational data, supporting preventive maintenance and troubleshooting, managing fuel-related activities, and following safety and environmental requirements. The position works on rotating shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and public holidays, and reports to the Energy Manager.

Requirements

Completion of intermediate education or BT 3, plus four years of technical certification or vocational training in mechanical and/or electrical systems.
Three to five years of relevant experience in generator operation or a similar role.
Ability to perform basic technical troubleshooting and identify faults.
Reliability and strong attention to detail.
Strong safety awareness and adherence to established safety procedures.
Ability to work rotating shifts and respond effectively during emergencies.
Good team coordination and collaboration skills.
Fair working knowledge of English.

Responsibilities

Operate diesel generators, including starting, stopping, and adjusting system parameters during outages and testing cycles.
Monitor generators and auxiliary equipment to maintain continuous power supply and ensure smooth changeover between utility and backup power.
Record operating data, including load levels, fuel consumption, temperature, and pressure readings.
Carry out safe and efficient changeover of medium-voltage switchgears in accordance with safety standards.
Conduct routine checks of fuel levels and systems, oil, coolant, batteries, generator condition, and alarms; intervene as required.
Identify and troubleshoot mechanical or electrical faults, report abnormalities, and coordinate with maintenance teams.
Assist with preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and basic corrective actions for generators.
Coordinate with technicians and contractors on major repairs.
Monitor fuel consumption and storage levels; ensure safe handling and storage of diesel fuel; support fuel-supply logistics during extended outages.
Respond promptly to outages and emergencies and help maintain generator operation in critical facilities, particularly AUBMC.
Coordinate with Energy & Utilities teams to support system stability and reliability.
Follow diesel-operation and fuel-handling safety procedures and comply with environmental and safety regulations.
Maintain operational logs and records.
Perform other related duties as requested.
