The Staff Orthodontist provides orthodontic patient care, resident education, and program support, reporting to the Department Chairperson. Patient care is the primary responsibility and is expected to comprise at least 90% of the provider’s time. Care includes preventive, interceptive, and definitive orthodontic treatment for children and adults; cleft lip and palate orthodontics, including palatal expansion and orthopedic movement of cleft segments such as NAM; and specialized procedures for individuals with craniofacial anomalies. The orthodontist collaborates in planning and managing care for patients requiring orthognathic surgery and participates in all phases of treatment. Other procedures within the orthodontist’s specialization may be performed when approved under the delineation of privileges. Resident education occurs through clinical observation and participation, lectures, seminars, and chairside assistance, guidance, and supervision while residents treat their patients. This role’s resident education is limited to clinical teaching that overlaps with patient care, rather than purely didactic activities. The orthodontist also supports resident assessment, selection, supervision, mentorship, and quality and performance improvement activities. The orthodontist refers patients who need team assessment to the Craniofacial Center Clinical and Medical Directors. When unable to attend monthly Craniofacial Team meetings, the orthodontist communicates the need for assessment, treatment status, recommendations for next steps, and relevant database elements, including photographs and radiographic images, to team leadership in writing. The orthodontist must follow Medical Staff bylaws and rules, department policies and procedures, and other appropriate duties requested by the Department Chairperson.
