This role is responsible for the overall safety of the towing vessel and the safety of all coworkers. The Deckhand will inform the Master-on-Duty of any unsafe or hazardous conditions on the vessel and report and correct hazardous or unsafe conditions when able. Responsibilities include making and breaking tow for customer vessels and other EMS boats, picking up and delivering barges, performing look-out duties, tying lines, laying wires, operating winches and ratchets, and handling, splicing, and throwing lines. The Deckhand will also perform daily routine maintenance and inspections of critical systems and safety equipment, maintain cleanliness of the engine room and vessel, participate in drills and safety meetings, learn and perform duties in emergency situations, and understand the proper use of PPE. Additional duties include ordering stores and supplies, taking on fuel, water, and oil, and providing training for new hires and trainees. Daily safety inspections of equipment and vessel structure are also required.
