The Dean of Students is a leadership role responsible for supporting students' wellbeing and partnering with families to ensure each student thrives. The Dean works with an entire grade level of students, moving with them from grades 6 through 8 or grades 9 and 10, to build powerful, lasting relationships and nurture their development. Deans and teachers collaborate closely to make the secondary experience rewarding for each student.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience working with middle grades students in classrooms or other contexts.
  • Passion for supporting adolescents to learn, grow and thrive as people.
  • Experience with advisory and social-emotional learning.
  • Ability to build deep relationships with students and their families.
  • Commitment to collaborating enthusiastically with other adults in supporting student success.
  • Ability to identify opportunities to support students, take action and mobilize resources on their behalf.
  • Ability to communicate in lucid, compelling ways with a high level of accountability and responsiveness.
  • Ability to navigate difficult conversations with grace and empathy.
  • Ability to effectively handle multiple priorities in a fast-moving environment.

Responsibilities

  • Advise and guide a total of 100-130 students and their families in grades 6-10 each year.
  • Teach, and help develop, a socio-emotional learning curriculum.
  • Develop strong, ongoing relationships with parents and students.
  • Monitor and guide students' academic progress and social and emotional well-being.
  • Uphold high standards of personal conduct by students.
  • Be the primary point of contact for parents and colleagues about individual students.
  • Lead daytime and/or evening programs for parents and students on special topics.
  • Partner with faculty, associate division heads, and members of the student success team to build strong communities of students.
  • Develop plans to support students' success in school, and follow through with colleagues and families to ensure student needs are met.
  • Guide colleagues on how to best support each individual student's success, growth and happiness.
  • Contribute to a deans team dedicated to all Avenues students' wellbeing.
