About The Position

At Uncommon Schools, the Dean of Students (DOS) partners with the Principal and Director of Operations to cultivate a school culture where students are actively engaged in academics and enthusiastic about attending school. The goal is to create an environment where students enjoy learning and interact respectfully with peers, teachers, and the community. Deans are responsible for building strong relationships and fostering a positive school culture to ensure all students embody the school's values and remain focused on their path to college and beyond. The Dean will also spearhead initiatives related to school culture, the college preparatory focus, culturally responsive teaching, and student and family engagement.

  • 3+ years of experience working with youth or teaching in an urban district or charter school setting, with an explicit focus on building rapport and trust
  • Proven track record of holding high standards and offering emotional and academic support to students
  • Bachelor’s degree is required

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Principal and Director of Operations to establish a positive, achievement-oriented, and culturally responsive school culture.
  • Demonstrate mastery of the instructional taxonomy to model behavior management best practices for teachers.
  • Support teachers in empowering students to meet their full academic and personal potential.
  • Navigate behavioral crisis-intervention and acute behavioral issues, and manage the school-wide behavior plan utilizing culturally responsive techniques.
  • Collaborate with teachers, students, and families to create and implement individual behavior plans.
  • Manage systems that support school initiatives leading to academic success for students (e.g., attendance systems, homework systems).
  • Be highly present and visible during school hours, ensuring an inclusive and joyful school culture.
  • Model the school’s values and the standard for academic and personal excellence.
