About The Position

The Academic Dean promotes the educational development of all students and the professional development of all staff within the school. This role involves assisting with curriculum development and improvement, supervising textbook review and ordering, overseeing the development of curriculum, lesson plans, and instruction, updating course descriptions, coordinating after-school programs, managing daily class schedules, coordinating academic activities with department chairs, overseeing instructional field trip planning, and handling failing letters and summer school preparation. The Dean also brings the academic and event calendar to weekly administrative meetings. Additionally, the role involves conferencing with students and parents on academic issues, scheduling and coordinating tutorial programs and after-school/Saturday school activities, assessing grade and mid-quarter reports, preparing standardized testing schedules and inventory, overseeing homework, classwork, projects, and tests in Illuminate or equivalent, reporting on Illuminate usage, reviewing student progress, and maintaining lists of high honor/honor students. The Dean also assists in organizing the school improvement plan, oversees school operations in the Principal's absence, aids in scheduling student activities, oversees student attendance records, and assists with safety drills. Furthermore, the Dean holds teacher orientation and in-service training, prepares staff development items for faculty meetings, conducts teacher observations, and establishes communication rapport with parents, students, principals, and teachers. The role requires enriching job skills through professional development, staying updated on state and charter regulations, managing and filing documents, and actively participating in faculty meetings and staff committees.

Requirements

  • 3+ years as a teacher
  • Up-to-date computer and technology knowledge
  • Experience in designing/conducting in-services, workshops, and other types of professional development
  • Experience in providing instructional coaching and/or support
  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrate excellent computer literacy skills and technology awareness
  • Possess ability to work in collaborative manner with all constituents of the school: teachers, administrative staff, board of trustees, students, parents and others
  • Ability to manage personnel
  • Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data
  • Exceptional organizational, communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills

Responsibilities

  • Assist with curriculum developments and improvement
  • Supervise textbook review and textbook ordering
  • Oversee the development of curriculum, lesson plans and instruction in the classroom
  • Update course descriptions and offerings in school manual and school website
  • Coordinate teacher and student involvement of after school program
  • Responsible for developing and changing of daily class schedule
  • Coordinate all academic activities with the department chairs

  • Report weekly at administration meeting any teachers who are not using Illuminate or equivalent properly
  • Review student progress at the end of each quarter and notify parents of students on academic probation
  • Maintain list of high honor/honor students
  • Assist in organization of school improvement plan with staff, parents and community members
  • Hold teacher evaluation conferences based on records of performance evaluation
  • Oversee school operations in Principal's absence
  • Assist in scheduling student activities by participating in the development of class schedules, teacher assignments and extracurricular activity schedules
  • Oversee student attendance records and assist the office manager on truancy issues
  • Aide in safety drill practices and inspections
  • Hold teacher orientation and in-service training throughout the year
  • Regularly prepare items for staff development for weekly faculty meetings and attend weekly administrative meetings
  • Conference with teachers on academic issues in the classroom
  • Conduct formal and informal teacher observations
  • Establish communication rapport with parents, students, principals and teachers through conferences
  • Create and maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents and community members
  • Present information accurately through clear communication skills
  • Enrich job skills through professional development activities
  • Keep up to date on and abide by state and charter regulations and policies
  • Gather, manage and file all reports, records and other documents required
  • Be active in faculty meetings and assist in staff committees as necessary
