About The Position

Under the direction of the Principal, the Dean of Students serves as an instructional leader in the planning, coordination, and administration of school activities and programs, including curriculum, instruction, assessment, student conduct and attendance, athletics and extracurricular programs, school operations, and the supervision and evaluation of assigned personnel.

Requirements

  • B.A./B.S. degree
  • Valid California teaching credential.
  • Minimum of three years of classroom teaching experience.
  • Drive to attain results; proven experience and effectiveness in improving student achievement in classroom and/or school.
  • Has a positive approach in responsibilities, is energetic and demonstrates compassion.
  • Self-motivated; able to accept criticism and grow as a result.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist and oversee the development and improvement of curriculum, lesson plans, and instruction in the classroom.
  • In collaboration with the Admin team, conducts teacher orientation, in-service training and other professional development throughout the year.
  • Conduct formal and informal teacher observations utilizing the appropriate MPS evaluation tools.
  • Conference with teachers on academic/behavioral issues in the classroom.
  • Oversee student attendance records and assist with truancy issues.
  • Lead in safety drill practices and inspections and include updates and revise school safety plan with local law enforcement collaboration for approval by MPS executive board.
  • Oversee student service programs in the areas of child welfare and attendance, discipline procedures, school safety, assure compliance of laws, education codes, and regulations, and Title IX matters.
  • Assist students develop positive behavior through a student discipline management system in a process aligned with restorative justice practices.
  • Hold conferences with parents/guardians related to student and school matters.
  • In collaboration with the administrative team, create a student success plan for struggling students.
  • Remains current in MPS policies regarding academic and behavior probation for students and applies the policies appropriately.
  • Collaborate with the special education team to develop and sustain intervention strategies for students with IEPs and 504 Plans, especially in matters of disciplinary actions that result in a suspension or expulsion.
  • Supervise at transition periods, break, lunch, before school and after school.
  • Performs a variety of administrative duties to assist the Principal in managing the school.
  • Supervises the performance of designated certificated and/or classified personnel; assigns duties to faculty and staff as appropriate to meet school objectives; assists with the recruiting, interviewing, and selection of new faculty and staff.
  • Develops and administers disciplinary procedures in accordance with district policies and state laws; receives referrals and confers with students, parents, teachers, community agencies, and law enforcement; responds to and resolves parent, student, and staff concerns and complaints; serves on discipline or expulsion panels as assigned.
  • Participates as needed in Individual Educational Plan meetings and Student Study Teams.
  • Liaison to the after-school program in collaboration with school staff and/or personnel from outside agencies.
  • Liaison to student government, extracurricular activities, the student athletics program, and other competitive or performance programs and events.
  • Supervises activities, including evening activities, as assigned.
  • Assist in coordination and preparing mandated reports for charter authorizing agencies and their visits to school sites. (Charter School Division, WASC, Public School Choice, etc.)
  • Follow through with communication to all stakeholders especially when involving safety, behavior, and attendance.
  • Communicate directly with the school principal regarding all major incidents that may result in suspension/expulsion.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
