About The Position

The Day Camp Leader is responsible for the effective operation of the HYPE Summer Camp (Helping Youth Pursue Excellence). Camp activities range from focusing on healthy child development to sports and recreation programming. This position is part of the Canada Summer Jobs Program and is a fixed-term contract for 8 weeks. The Durham Community Health Centre (DCHC) is a registered, charitable organization providing integrated, accessible, and equitable community-based primary care, wellness services, and health education to Durham community members facing barriers. DCHC focuses on equity-based programs for priority populations and operates as a team-based interprofessional group. To be eligible for this position through the Canada Summer Jobs initiative, applicants must meet specific criteria including age (15-30), student status, Canadian citizenship or permanent residency, and legal entitlement to work in Canada. The role involves planning and implementing camp programs, assisting with publicity and staff hiring, training and supervising staff, coordinating the staff team, supporting the Leader-in-Training program, backing up counselors, maintaining public relations, managing supplies, and participating in evaluations. The role also emphasizes providing support and accommodations for campers with diverse needs and promoting inclusivity.

Requirements

  • Must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment.
  • Must have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year; or have completed a diploma or a degree.
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
  • Proof of attending post-secondary education as of September 2026 or have completed a diploma or degree.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and lead engaging, recreational, and age-appropriate programs and activities.
  • Proven ability to coordinate, supervise and support camp staff in a team-based environment.
  • Previous experience working with children.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Proven ability to take direction and work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Current Criminal Reference Check (including Vulnerable Sector Screening), if in the age range of 18-30.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR certifications.
  • Full vaccination against COVID-19 is mandatory for this position (DCHC will however adhere to its duty to accommodate those who are unable to be fully vaccinated for a reason related to a human rights protected ground).

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the effective planning and implementation of camp programs.
  • Help publicize the camp.
  • Assist with the interviewing and hiring of camp staff.
  • Train and supervise camp staff.
  • Coordinate staff team at camp location.
  • Assist with the Leader-in-Training program and coordination of volunteers.
  • Back-up counsellors as needed.
  • Maintain good public relations with parents and public.
  • Suggest purchase and maintain inventory of supplies.
  • Participate in evaluating camp activities, summer staff, and write a final report.
  • Provide support and accommodations for campers with diverse needs, including those with disabilities, language barriers, or other challenges.
  • Ensure all campers feel welcome and included regardless of their background, abilities, or identities.
  • Implement activities and strategies that promote inclusivity and respect for diversity.
  • Other duties as required.
